Today we’d like to introduce you to Morris “AvaNu” Owens.

Morris “AvaNu” Owens

Hi Morris “AvaNu”, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At the age of 12, I began recording with best friend, Zip. After years of writing, we felt we finally had the perfect hit to catapult our careers. I was 21 when I signed my first record deal and the opportunity came while shopping Zip’s single “Baby” which I wrote. I would go to release three albums under the imprint. In 2015, I was released from my contract due to reasons unknown. I was going through a drastic change, so I dealt with anxiety and depression. After a year, I began to get back to my original mindset. I began to study different distribution companies and ways I could continue my journey. 2017 I released my first indie album Black Beauty and I’ve released two more since as well as a collaborative album with Zip (HITAHOLICS).

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing is ever easy. After getting signed by 5 diamond music group, I thought I was at the top of my game. I was touring and actually making legit music money. However, once reality began to kick in I began to realize there was no foundation. By the time I could develop a plan, I was released from the label. It left me vulnerable.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
If I was asked this question years ago, I would’ve just said I’m an “artist”; however I’m more than just an “artist”. I do more than write and sing RnB, I’m an actor and working on my stand-up comedy as well. What makes me the proudest is my ability to give 100% in anything I do, whether I’m acting or singing. If I was to say, I’m most known as AvaNu my stage name however I’m like an onion I have many layers! I’ve been compared to Jamie Foxx career-wise and it’s been one of my most motivational comparisons.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I go inner for guidance however I do enjoy listening to “scared straight” podcasts and “sisters who kill” … something about those crime podcasts!
