Meet Myke Epps of Conyers Fit Body Boot Camp in East – Conyers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myke Epps.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I knew as early as high school that I couldn’t work for someone else for 20+ years. I was involved in organized sports from age four, so I was always physically active. After college, I got involved in coaching/training youth athletes, mostly soccer players. During that time, I also did some sport specific training with athletes who were looking to get to the collegiate level and beyond.

I didn’t really start to zero in on the dream of opening my own gym/studio until I lost my best friend to a heart attack in 2009. For me, the grief had me asking “What could/should I have done?” My answer was something like “I should have been more active in holding him accountable to his health?” That led to a desire to be more active and engaged in helping people avoid similar situations.

In 2012, I got my CPT and started doing group training at Get in Shape Bootcamp in Stone Mountain. Between 2012 and 2015, I worked on enhancing my skills as a trainer, building a clientele and building a brand/following that would serve as the foundation for taking the leap into business ownership.

After getting married in December 2016, my wife and I spent the spring/summer of 2017 creating our plan and we signed the lease for our space in November 2017 and immediately started the buildout. We opened the doors of Conyers Fit Body Boot Camp in February 2018 and in our first year, our clients lost over 500 pounds collectively.

Initially, we were a group training facility. In addition to group sessions, we now also offer meal prep delivery/pickup from the studio, personal training, and yoga. Our growth and success is due in large part to the family culture that we hold very dear. Our members represent a variety of ages, abilities, fitness/skill levels, and backgrounds.

Has it been a smooth road?
There has been very little about this experience that would qualify as smooth. One of the early challenges was bringing fitness to an unfamiliar area. With the Atlanta metro area being so broad, the bulk of my former clients were in areas that were a great distance away from Conyers, so it was to some extent like starting over attracting clients.

Another big challenge was funding the dream. Trying to balance impatience with good decision making was definitely a lesson learned. We didn’t make the greatest choices in a contractor and other providers, so we took some hits which left us scrambling to complete other projects.

The most consistent challenge has been getting the word out all over the area. We still have people come in saying they didn’t even know we were here, lol.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Conyers Fit Body Boot Camp – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that this city is so diverse. And I don’t mean just race/ethnicity. There is such a vast array of EVERYTHING! On any given day you can find yourself surrounded by people of different religions, backgrounds, education levels, businesses/industries, food preference… and the amazing thing is you might not even know it.

What I like least is probably what everyone likes least… there are soooo many people and everyone drives so traffic is a BEAST!!!
