Natasha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Who I am today started with one Google search five years ago, “How do I make money without going to college”?
I was born and raised in Portland, Jamaica and moved here five years ago for school. I majored in Criminal Justice and after less than three months of study, I found myself owing over 5,000 which to me was ridiculous! Even though it was understood that I was considered “out-of’state” and would be required to pay at least three times the “regular tuition”, I couldn’t, in my right mind continue to put myself in debt. I went home the last day of the quarter and decided that I’d have to transfer to a community college to save a little money. The wait for transfer was long so I had no choice to find other alternatives.
During my wait, I started googling ways to make “real money” without a college education. Now we all know how Google works and how ads pop up as soon as we even think about something! Well, an ad popped up about computer programming, content writing, online tutor, and loads of others. I’ve always had a thing for computers so sure enough, I did another google search, “How do I become a computer programmer”. That was where my life took a turn for the better.
Five years later, the sleepless nights and endless cups of coffee were all worth it – I taught myself how to code, and in no time I was building web applications, websites, and apps. Those years taught me determination, independence, resilience, and how to truly hustle. Today, I can call myself a Web Designer, Front End Developer, and the proud owner of a Digital Web Agency.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It certainly has not been a smooth road. My first struggle was having my computer crash and go dead while I was learning, I couldn’t afford another at the time so I had to wait for months until I was able to get another computer; the bad thing about that, I had to start all over again. Another struggle was getting my first real paid project as a freelancer and not being able to remember a thing I’d learned before, and because of my stubbornness, I refused to sleep or eat until I made progress.
Among those struggles, I had numerous episodes of self-doubt and the uncertainty of becoming anything “good enough”. At the time, I had no friends, no encouragement, just me and my computer, which in fact, affected my communication skills in a way I had never imagined. When locked in a room with just your computer and no social life, you soon forget how to communicate with people and it caused me to have anxiety which made me awkward in every environment away from my computer. I’m still struggling with anxiety, but I have become tremendously better with time by putting myself out there in the presence of people.
