Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan and Miranda Cleaver.
Although Cleaver Medical Group first opened its doors to patients in May 2017, the concept of the practice came about in 2013. At that time, my wife and I were completing our residencies in anesthesiology and dermatology, respectively. Miranda Reed Cleaver, a north Georgia native, had always wanted to make it back closer to home to promote healthy living, and provide compassionate quality healthcare for the community that had raised her. Throughout her residency, she was heavily impacted by the suffering that she saw in her patients, the impairment of their lives from chronic pain, and the negative effect that improperly managed opioids had on their personal lives. After completing her residency in anesthesiology, she then decided to pursue a fellowship in pain management. After completing her fellowship, she went on to start two pain management practices in Missouri for a hospital system. After working under the hospital system, she actively began preparing for the opening of her own private practice, the Cleaver Medical Group. She wanted to structure her private practice to always put the patient first, and to have the control to make the decisions that are best for the patient. As for myself, I was fortunate enough to have been exposed to dermatology at a young age. My father is a dermatologist, and growing up, I would see how much he absolutely loved what he did. His excitement for his patients and his job was infectious. So infectious, that my two older brothers followed the same career path, and are dermatologists as well. My father has served and is still serving the dermatology needs of his community for over 30 years. He has instilled many great principles, one that certainly applies today is the importance of community. We certainly did not make the decision to start our practice in Cumming lightly. Cumming has a strong sense of community, great schools, businesses and social values. We don’t simply work here – we live here, shop here, and eventually, our (future) children will go to school here. We hope to serve our patients, their families, and their children’s families for the next thirty years to come.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a new practice in a new community has certainly had its challenges. It has taken countless hours of planning and preparation, not to mention perseverance and remaining focused on the ultimate goal for establishing a private practice. We have been fortunate to have received a warm welcome from the community to ease that process. Establishing a medical practice is not a process that happens overnight. We have to earn the trust of our patients, our referring providers, and our community. That is our main priority, and we are confident that in time, the residents of north Georgia will know the Cleaver Medical Group as the experts in interventional pain management and dermatology.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cleaver Medical Group story. Tell us more about the business.
The Cleaver Medical Group encompasses two different medical specialties, Dermatology and Interventional Pain Management. The Center for Dermatology and Skin Cancer Surgery’s mission is to provide comprehensive and personalized dermatologic care for each and every patient. I am a board certified dermatologist with additional fellowships in both Mohs micrographic surgery and dermatopathology. We are an all-inclusive dermatology practice specializing in complex medical dermatology, skin cancer surgery including Mohs micrographic surgery, and cosmetic dermatology. Mohs micrographic surgery is an advanced surgical technique for the surgical removal of skin cancers of the head and neck that require tissue preservation while achieving the highest cure rates compared to other treatment modalities. We specialize in cosmetic injectables, including Botox® and a wide selection of fillers, and cosmetic procedures to help address facial rejuvenation and wrinkle treatment without the need for surgery. The Center for Interventional Pain Management is a 100% referral based practice specializing in chronic pain. We provide a comprehensive approach to chronic pain, conservatively addressing the underlying etiology associated with the cause of pain, and to create an individualized treatment plan for an overall improvement in quality of life. This is accomplished through medical management, as well as interventional procedures including various injections, nerve blocks, and nerve ablations depending on the source of pain. We believe that each patient should be living the life that they deserve. The difference with Cleaver Medical Group is that our patients will always come first. Establishing and maintaining healthy skin and an improved quality of life is an ongoing effort, and we will be your partner in the journey.
We understand that you have a choice in your medical care, and we strive to exceed all expectations in addressing each and every one of your skin related concerns, whether it be medical, cosmetic or surgical. Our fellowship trained, board certified dermatologist will take the time to develop a professional relationship and discuss any questions related to your specific skin condition, the cause, the treatment, and any preventable efforts moving forward. Establishing and maintaining skin health is an ongoing effort, by both the patient and the dermatologist. Although new to the Cumming area, we will be here for many years not only gaining your trust, but that of your friends and family. We hope that you will come by and become part of the Cleaver medical family!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
In life, I certainly consider myself lucky to have met my wife and to have been introduced to this beautiful part of the country. I consider myself lucky that my wife is my business partner in this adventure. I consider myself lucky to be doing what I love every day. In business, I don’t necessarily think that luck has had much of a role. You have to create your own opportunities. You certainly can’t wait for an opportunity to be handed to you. My wife and I have worked hard to get where we are, 28 years of education is certainly an investment of time and energy in its own right.
