Meet Navi Styles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Navi Styles.

Hi Navi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A story that isn’t finished being written is exactly where my life is at this moment. I’m kind of a small-town girl I was born in Savannah, GA spent a little time there till my mother and father moved their five up to Tennessee where my father is from. They’ve been married for over 30 years so I’ve always had an example of a strong black couple. Childhood was a challenge especially being the new girl all the time, I went to three different elementary schools, two different middle schools and two different high schools 1 college (Tennessee State University) but out of that birthed my versatility, my ability to read a room and spark a convo with almost anyone. It also created several perspectives in my life that kept me open-minded and aid with my creativity.

Speaking of creativity I started coming into my own style very young playing in my sister’s closet and dress up with my mom’s heels. When I was about 13 years old my sisters started their owned modeling company went on to be on America’s Next Top Model, Project Runway, so much to look up to so young. They were a big influence on my life and reminded me to stay original no matter what.

The modeling company consisted of two of my sisters, Jasmin as the main model of the company, my sister Mel the manager of the company. I also have a sister Jade who is a singer and a teacher and a brother Kevin that went to Dartmouth University for Engineering. One of my sisters went on to get married and have beautiful children and the company slowed a bit.

At about 16 years old I stepped into a role of the company titled the head wardrobe stylist. Styling and design I loved more than anything. I remember challenging school dress code all the time because I just had to be myself. I’ve had the honor to be styling staff in been in fashion shows from Notably Nashville to Nashville Fashion Walk as well as a TV appearance interview on News Channel 5.

At 20, I opened up my own photography studio along with my sister Jasmin, the first building was in downtown Nashville the second building was on Taylor street in Germantown. The studios sparked a bigger light in Jasmin and we decided we wanted more outreach, so recently moved to Atlanta to bring our studio here! I cannot wait to see where Atlanta takes us and how we can evolve from this city. Please stay tuned for what Navi Styles has coming next! (:

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road but when you fall from the first bump you learn that they are more and you learn how to prepare for them. My mindset keeps me grounded. The physical is constantly changing but if you keep your mind focused and grounded nothing can stop you but you. They’re no failures in life just results. Failure means you tried and I rather be a go-getter than a person that let life passes them because of fear.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
