Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kristy Christopher-Holloway.
Dr. Kristy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I founded New Vision Counseling Center in May 2008. With the goal in mind to offer quality mental health services in a warm and friendly environment, I was determined to serve the needs of the community and started practicing in Douglasville, GA. In 2010 NVCC grew to become a group practice and again, in late 2010, NVCC opened its 2nd location in Smyrna, GA. I firmly believed that therapy should be for those who need it, not just those who can afford it which is one of the reasons why I maintain that in addition to self-paying clients, NVCC will always accept insurance as well as offer reduced fees for clients in need.
As it relates to my other roles, I am an Assistant Professor at Lindsey Wilson College, the Founder and Director of New Vision Counseling Center, LLC, a group private practice in Douglasville, GA, and the Founder of New Vision Consulting and Training, LLC. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Georgia, a National Certified Counselor (NCC), a Distance Credentialed Counselor (DCC), a counselor supervisor, and certified in perinatal mental health. As an educator and trainer, speaker, and consultant, I work with many helping professionals including counselors, counselors-in-training, social workers, as well as medical professionals. I present at conferences, workshops, and trainings locally, nationally, and internationally with focuses on cultural competence, African Americans and mental health, the psycho-emotional impact of infertility in African American women, addressing religion and spirituality in the counseling session, the strong Black woman syndrome and generational trauma, operating a successful private practice, incorporating wellness in clinical practice, and more.
Clinically, my research focuses on the mental health help-seeking experiences of religious or spiritual African American women diagnosed with infertility, as well as the psycho-emotional impact of infertility in African American women and couples. I work with minority women experiencing infertility trauma, birth trauma, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (postpartum depression, anxiety, etc.), and pregnancy and infant loss (also commonly referred to as perinatal loss or reproductive loss). I have extensive experience and have worked in settings to include private practice, in-home, outpatient, and residential treatment, working with children, adolescents, and adults, providing individual, couple, family, and group counseling.
Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
One of the things that set us apart is our humanness and connection with our clients. While we do maintain boundaries, we are known in the local community, in parts of GA, and in other states by the quality work that we offer. We do not take our role in helping professionals lightly. I am most proud that after 11 years, as a Black female entrepreneur, I am still in the game and making significant impacts.
Individually, I am most proud of the advocacy work that I do for ethnic minority women experiencing infertility and issues related to maternal mental health.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t know if I believe in LUCK perse. I think everything happens the way it is supposed to happen and when it is supposed to happen. The universe and divine experiences align us and connect us to our potential and the things we need to accomplish.
That being said, these experiences have played a significant role in my life and in my business. I tend to use various methods, including prayer, meditation, positive thinking, affirmations, and more to manifest areas in my life and business.
