Today we’d like to introduce you to Ni Feng.
Hi Ni, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My main professional and academic interest is in the area of illustration, including but not limited to concept design. I graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in June of this year. And I will continue my graduate studies at SCAD. By pursuing studies in illustration at the graduate level, I seek to build upon my current understanding of and skills at illustration, finding my own distinctive art style and becoming an illustrator capable of bringing stories to life.
Both my parents being oil painting artists, I was exposed to visual arts in general at a very young age. While the influence of my parents aroused my initial interest in illustration, it was the exposure to video games in high school that truly ignited my passion for concept design. Not knowing what to expect, I started dabbling in video games only as a means to kill time, but soon stumbled upon a few games whose art styles and designs would inspire me even to this date. In particular, the games that have influenced me the most are World of Warcraft and the Dark Souls series. Their unique art styles and countless breathtaking scene and character designs are instrumental in bringing the captivating backstories to life and creating the truly immersive fantasy worlds, where the number of hours I have spent running around shall remain a secret never to be revealed to my parents. Since these days, it has always been my goal to become a concept artist who can bring stories, be it for video games or just one of my random imaginary plots, to life through my own artwork.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road I chose to become an illustrator was not a smooth one. It wasn’t easy to get a job because everyone is good at drawing and I needed to have my own unique style to stand out. So I chose to give myself some more time to prepare my portfolio and find my own style.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Now working on a horror pixel game with a friend. I am responsible for drawing some props and character design. My specialty is character design. I enjoy the process and I’m excited to see my work in the game. I am most proud of the fact that I had the opportunity to learn illustration in a different cultural context. This has helped me in my creative work.
What does success mean to you?
In my opinion, success for me means that my work is appreciated, I have a stable income, and I can paint a lot of satisfactory works
