Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Carter.
Nicole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been in marketing for a number of years and actually started a marketing company, Creative Flame Media, a few years ago. While working with clients, I noticed an issue that I was running into over and over again, trying to find diverse photos. Quality, authentic, diverse photos. Black women with natural hair, middle-aged women in business positions – size diversity, sexual orientation, etc. – it was tough.
But in the age of digital marketing, having the right image is so important. There’s a psychology to marketing. People relate to images in which they can see some aspect of themselves. And, with targeted social marketing – I could create detailed campaigns for my clients’ potential customers. For example, a campaign focused on black female business owners with natural hair that live in the southeast and have children – yes, we can get that granular. To capture the customer’s attention amongst all the noise though, I needed images that looked like them.
And, that’s how Diversity Photos was born. I spoke with my two co-founders about creating a stock photography site that focused on the images that have been typically hard to find – and they were all in.
Has it been a smooth road?
Getting the word out has been the biggest challenge. The stock photography industry is an established one that has some large existing players in it. We are a niche agency – but one that serves a need that is growing in prominence – especially amongst the existing political backdrop.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
DiversityPhotos.com was created to address a problem that creatives and businesses around the world encounter on a daily basis… finding images that look like the audience they need to communicate with. We are a stock photography site where people and companies can purchase royalty-free stock images that focus on ethnicity, age, disabilities, sexual orientation, size and spirituality.
Our mission is to provide visual content that authentically represents our global community. Our team and mindset is founded on the vision of inclusion, the dispelling of stereo-types and not only respecting but celebrating the nuances and complex layers of the human race. We show respect to the world around us by actively deepening our relationships within communities to ensure the stories we capture are true to the people represented.
As a company, we are proud not only of the images that we capture but the people who are capturing them. We’ve worked on building a base of contributing photographers that are diverse as our subjects!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is a great city for a lot of different businesses including ours. There’s a solid base of professional and technical talent that companies can benefit from, a strong networking scene and in our case a truly diverse community just waiting to be captured.
