Meet Nicole Merizalde

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Merizalde.

Hi Nicole, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
During the pandemic, I was working as a Graphic Designer for a construction company. While there, I met a coworker that was a graffiti artist on the side. This sparked my fascination with murals and I began researching how to attempt them, who the local artists were creating them, and how to break into the public art scene. I eventually parted ways with my company and started testing out mural painting on friends’ walls and large wood planks. I submitted these projects to the Stack Squares call in Cabbagetown and was fortunate enough to be chosen for their 8th round of artists. Since then, I’ve been a featured muralist on various projects, as well as an assistant muralist to other incredible Atlanta artists.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest obstacle has always been my own hesitance. Even before I attempted painting, I was terrified that I wasn’t ready yet to put my work out there. Fortunately, when I finally decided to just go for it, the risks that were taken brought incredible rewards. Taking this leap of faith into murals has pushed me to work harder, take chances, and develop trust in myself as an artist and creator.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a full-time Muralist and Illustrator. In the beginning of my painting career, I was known for creating minimalist pieces with simplistic shapes and bright, bold colors. I have recently been experimenting with more realistic paintings and sketches. I would say I’m currently known for creating many Greek and Colombian-themed pieces (representative of my heritage) and for having a deep appreciation for ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. I’m proud of challenging myself and developing my art style, slowly discovering what messages I want to send and how to visually express them. I feel that my Greek and Colombian cultural influences set me apart. I aim to create pieces that further represent the societal and emotional complexities of living as a “hyphenated American”.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
There is room for everyone to succeed. I think it’s natural to feel a little competitive when starting out, but once you begin to meet other Atlanta artists, you’ll experience an outpouring of love and support in your journey. Atlanta has an incredible community that welcomes every style, story, and experience you have to share.
