Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Stakz.
Nina Stakz is a freelance Director, Writer, DP and Editor with 14 years of experience in the field of video production. Starting her career in radio, she made the easy transition to television in 2005 with a production of her first television project “Sightz & Soundz.” Aired on the CW in three states, the entertainment program was the catalyst for her current career projection. After landing a job with the local CBS affiliate she worked in nearly every facet of news production for the following five years. In 2010, Stakz made a transition into working for herself by starting Onyx Theory Arts Visual Media. She began directing micro-budget music videos and commercials for upcoming musicians and small businesses. Her business began to outgrow her location so she made the move to Atlanta in 2014. Since making the move, she has worked on productions with talents such as Akon, Gucci Mane, Janelle Monae, Wendy Raquel Robinson, and more. In 2018, she won two film festival awards and was selected for a number of other festivals. She has written, directed and/or shot ten short films, TV pilots and content including the web series “New Year, New Us” streaming now on YouTube & Facebook Watch.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think the industry is really just getting used to women being on the technical side of video & film production. I find myself constantly answering questions about my skillset that seem to be rooted in the fact that most people don’t think women do this kind of work. Clients will ask me “So, do you shoot it yourself?” “Do you edit your videos?” Just silly questions that I don’t think are asked of men. So, being taken seriously is really the only obstacle other than the everyday struggle of being self-employed.
Please tell us about Onyx Theory Arts.
Onyx Theory Arts is a visual media and music production company based in Atlanta. We specialize in film and video production along with original music production and film scoring. We are known mostly for our music video productions but made the move to filmmaking in 2018.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started 10 years earlier. But no regrets, my time will be my time.
