Today we’d like to introduce you to Octavia Landix.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been a music lover. In my teens, I explored my musical talents by taking piano and electric bass lessons, onto beat making, then I immersed myself in the recording studio to understand engineering, production and songwriting all before the age of 18. I spent much of my time finding my voice playing in bands opening for big acts in large venues all over Los Angeles while honing my skills in the recording studio. Eventually, I went to college to study music full time to further my education in musicianship and audio engineering. In 2014, I landed a position as studio personnel to Rodney “DarkChild” Jerkins through Capitol Records in Hollywood, Ca. The wealth of knowledge I gained there was amazing! No doubt, this pivoted me to the start of my professional music career. In 2017, I began working at Deep End Recording studios as an on call recording engineer. I have had the pleasure of working with many phenomenal artists such as V Bozeman, Kendrick Lamar via Top Dawg Entertainment, R&B/Soul music legend Kipper Jones, grammy-nominated Artist/singer/songwriter Kenyon Dixon, and Grammy award-winning Columbian recording artist Kali Uchis. My recent contributions to Kali Uchis’s latest album “Sin Miedo” has gotten me huge recognition due to her album being nominated for a Grammy and the Latin AMA”s while winning from several other platforms such as the AMA’s and the 2021 Billboard and Latin Billboard Awards. I know this is just the beginning of greater things to come and I am very excited!
Like anyone establishing their career, they’re going to be challenged. One of the hardest and most challenging things I had to deal with was consciously making the decision to pursue music full time; leaving the idea of working a regular 9-5 and taking a gamble on myself. Once I got past that, the second hardest thing was establishing myself as a professional woman engineer in a male-dominated industry; as a woman of color on top of that. I’ve had to work twice as hard to get the same recognition as my male counterparts and still do till this day.
The styles I specialize in as a producer are R&B, Pop, & Hip Hop. As an engineer, my skills lie in recording and mixing. Over my career, my major accomplishments stem from being a recording engineer but my most proudest releases are independent projects I have produced. I’m most proud because music production is my first love; I’m at my happiest operating in that role. What sets me apart is my ability to focus on the subtle things that make a song memorable. Many creatives can get obsessed wanting to make the next hit record and that can become stressful. In the music biz, you don’t know what the public will like or dislike. When I’m working on a song, my approach is “it doesn’t have to be a hit but it’s gotta be hot!” This makes the creative process fun and enjoyable for me. Every song needs to have a moment that makes it special. Those moments cannot be forced but created organically. My next proudest accomplishment is working on Kali Uchis’ Grammy/AMA/Billboard nominated and winning project. For me, it represents the physical representation of the fruit of my labor.
