Today we’d like to introduce you to Dixon Courtland.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I like to tell people I’ve been in the car customization business since thirteen years old, but it wasn’t necessary a business at that time, it was more of a learning experience, because I was young and inexperienced, so I offered my services free of charge for about two years. The first vehicle I installed on was my brother’s 2001 Buick Lasbre. I begged him to let me install on his car once he finally agreed I purchased and installed an entire car stereo system in his car for free. The satisfaction I gained from hooking up that car stereo was beyond anything I had experienced at that time, so at that point I knew this was something I was going to do. At the age 17, I started to gain recognition amongst my peers in my hometown, Columbus, Georgia, for being known for car audio. I kept pushing and pushing by working different jobs like at autozone & at electrical companies to improve my customer service and part/ vehicle knowledge. Mid way through 2019 I quit my job at autozone and reached out to the owner of a high-end automotive customization shop in Atlanta offering my services. I worked with them for about four months as their audio/ automotive accessories installation guy; before coming back to my hometown and opening my own shop, fast forward to today, we’ve installed on a little over 200 cars in the first 6 months of business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve faced many obstacles since the beginning of my entrepreneurial endeavors. I incorporated my business at 18 while also being a full time college student & my only employee at the time. So as you could imagine handling day to day task at the shop in between classes got kind of tough but as time went on my time management and focus improved greatly. I’m still in college maintaining an 3.8 Gpa while handling the day to day task at the shop.
OD Audio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At OD audio we offer the sale and installation of automotive accessories, this includes car stereo, tint films, radar & laser jammers, interior and exterior lighting, rims and tires. on the customization side of things, we fabricate custom doors panels, decks, consoles, and headliners. We are mostly known for the tier one quality of our work and our customer service. this is what also sets us apart from others. We treat every vehicle as if they were our own.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me success is defined by my happiness. If I’m happy & waking up every day ready to better myself and my craft (which I do Everyday) then I’m successful.
