Today we’d like to introduce you to ODDli.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
When I was a kid, I always enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together. Eventually, when that wasn’t enough, I would actually destroy said items and try and create something entirely new. I was always curious how most contraptions worked or how someone even came to think of what they made. Music really stood out to me when I was growing up but I never really thought I would be tackling it like I am now. I always enjoyed learning something new and was almost craving for a purpose or an outlet in which I can really express myself and what I am passionate about. When I was in high school, the majority of the population only listened to hip-hop, pop, or rock and it was almost unheard of if you were listening to anything else. Luckily I had few friends that stepped out of the norm and listened to electronic music. At the time we really enjoyed artists such as Flux Pavilion and Blackmill which then was really melodic, mid-tempo songs that had me hooked. My interest to take it seriously really blew up when the same friends took me to my first electronic show as a high school graduation gift. I felt the energy that the DJ was dishing out and observed how the crowd was reacting. That same night I took a good look around me and decided where I wanted to be and that was on stage as an artist.
Please tell us about your art.
Before I started creating my own music I was a mobile DJ playing for parties and different events lugging around my own equipment. Nowadays I am creating and synthesizing different kinds of sounds for my own sample library. When I’m not working on that, I am on a DAW concocting bass heavy music and working to better my craft every day. My influences range from early 90’s cartoons/anime to the artists I listen to now, I believe inspiration can come from places you least suspect. In this very saturated market of both DJs and producers, you have to go past the bar and produce something that hasn’t quite been done before or create a tune that really stands out and having your own created sounds/samples will help achieve that. There are plenty of resources and synthesizers that you can use to make a sound from scratch, one of my favorites is a VST-plugin called Serum that I use to make most of my sounds, but another way to make something your own is sample manipulation which can go a long way when producing your tracks. The power of music is not to be underestimated, it is a universal language that knows no boundaries. My main goal is to have my songs bring different sorts of people together no matter where they’re from or who they are, whether they know each other or not, they all got together to enjoy one thing and that’s the music.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
The role of any artist is to create, and that’s their way of contributing to society. I feel like that is always how it’s going to be, but as an artist especially if you are well-known, have to think about the fans or the people that are watching and following your everyday activities. I believe we have to be the role model that these people need, not what they want exactly. I’m not really one to keep up with different events and stories going on around the world these days but I know I want it to be a safe world, if my music can help in any way that would mean everything.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can find some of my work on SoundCloud as ODDli, I am working on releasing a lot more content and have a bunch of different projects at the ready. I also just started a new promotional team with a colleague and long-time friend called rewire with an Instagram tag @rewireatl to help hardworking individuals get their fix and to have something to look forward to in their long weeks. We are focusing on booking local talent both known and unknown at distinct locations to help the dance scene in Atlanta. Our first event Safehouse was at Mother on Edgewood Avenue. We will be working on different events year round so keep an eye out.
