Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Bolden.
Olivia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ever since I was a child, I’ve always been fascinated by anything creative, rather it was painting a picture or developing a crazy science experiment. I just liked the thought process of turning one ordinary thing into something amazing, but I never could find something I truly wanted to stick with. I went from getting a Polaroid camera because I wanted to be a photographer, to getting a full-blown easel with professional painting equipment because I wanted to become the next Basquiat. No matter what I did, after so long, I just couldn’t stay motivated enough to continue to pursue it.
Now fast forward to me in my 20s, at this time I was obsessed with candles. Candles have always been something that helped me decompress after a long day, but I hated the inconsistency of the burn, the black marks it would leave on my wall, and it just didn’t seem like it was worthy of buying anymore. So, one day while I was out shopping with my boyfriend, we decided to go down the candle aisle just so I could look to see if anything caught my eye. While walking down the isle, he said to me “Why don’t you just make your own candles, instead of spending money on ones you don’t even really like?”. At that very moment, a lightbulb went off in my head to start my own candle company, but also to find a way to make candles that don’t have all the qualities I hated in the other brands. Once I started researching and testing, I became obsessed with the science behind candle making and haven’t looked back since.
One thing I knew for sure was that I wanted a business name with “Worthy” in it, so I could reassure people that our products were worthy of being used in their homes and on their bodies. So after months of researching and testing, I developed Wax Worthy Candle Company in April of 2019 and the rest is history.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey has definitely not been easy. One of the hardest parts was the testing phase of the business. I had to spend 100s if not thousands on just testing and trying to develop a high-quality product and also I had to have a lot of patience. Another thing that has and will always be challenging for me and I’m sure for other business owners, is staying consistent and motivated, even when you don’t want to be. There are always highs and lows in business, so keeping that drive alive can always be challenging, but can also be very rewarding. You never know who’s watching and the moment you give up could’ve been the moment you were going to be the most successful you’ve ever been.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Wax Worthy Candle Co. – what should we know?
I knew when I first started the business, I wanted to make luxury candles with scents that were unforgettable but also appealing to both males and females. So since then, we have developed candles, which are made with 100% natural soy wax, high-quality fragrance that are infused with essential oils and are placed in an appealing black vessel. We have also created a wide variety of different products, such as soaps and incense, that are all handmade from scratch and plan to keep creating more products that bring luxury to your home but are still natural.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
All my family and friends have always been supportive of me. The two people that motivated me and helped the most have been my grandfather Ralph and my significant other Darius. My grandfather has always been a businessman ever since I can remember. I’ve always wanted to be like him and to have my own business one day, so when I came to him with the idea of Wax Worthy, it has been nothing but support ever since. My significant other Darius has always been in my corner supporting me along the way, rather it was buying me supplies or staying up all night to help make products with me, he’s always been there every step of the way.
