Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Haney.
Olivia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My clients always ask me, “How did you get into doing hair” and every time, I end up asking myself the same question. I’ve always been pretty savvy when it came to doing my own hair and maintaining it. I went from the small things to just pressing out my hair or a friend of mine. It got to the point people would ask me to do their hair and I would always so no. At some point, saying no all the time gets old. I then decided in 2018 to start my hair page on Instagram with that one follower I had being myself. It hasn’t even been two years yet and I have grown my following to over 900. I never thought that I would begin to take my business so serious. It was like others saw talent in me that I didn’t even see. Investing in myself would have to be one of the best decisions I’ve done for myself. I spent a pretty penny on the classes I’ve taken to master certain techniques. The saying is you have to spend money to make money and that’s indeed what I’ve done and seen. My Raw Cambodian hair collection has literally flourished right in my face. I was so nervous to invest in that simply because I know it’s hard to sell a product. However, I know my product is top tier therefore, I push it every day. Doing hair goes beyond making money for me. Its the client smile when I pass them the mirror or the text about how much they love my hairline. It’s what keeps me moving.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road definitely hasn’t been easy. It’s never easy to build a business from the bottom up. One challenge that I have had to face is discouragement. It came in different forms. From slow clientele to others around me, attempting to intimidate me from getting into an industry that has so many awesome stylists. At times I found myself dwelling on things like that until I began to tell myself what’s mine will always be mine. Gaining clients is one of the biggest challenges when entering the hair industry, of course, as well as maintaining them. Building up a following can be another challenge to face. However, I learned obstacles are simply building stones to the top. They are inevitable, meaning everyone has to face them but with dedication and perseverance, everyone can also overcome them. Besides gaining and keep clients, building a following, and mastering techniques, I’m also a full-time student at Spelman College and an after school teacher at The Westminster Schools. Whew, you can only imagine my schedule on a daily. Juggling my business, school, and work can be overwhelming at times but it never causes me to want to quit. I love what I do and I’m determined to keep building.
We’d love to hear more about Monet’s Hair Palace.
Monet’s Hair Palace is literally my baby. I birthed her in a sense and I’m carrying her every step of the way. I absolutely love doing hair and seeing awesome transformations. Most of my clients get my luxurious silk presses and luxurious quick-weaves. Taking care of their natural hair and growing hair out is my ultimate goal with any client of mine. Seeing results from where a client’s hair journey began and how healthy their hair looks in the future puts a huge smile on my face, its one of the main reasons I am in the hair game. Truthfully, it’s the biggest thing that sets me apart from other stylists. The care I have for natural hair is above the installs. The customer service and care I have for all my clients goes a long way.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love my city! I love it most because of the opportunities that are all over. You can literally accomplish so much here because of all the networking and various amounts of options here to choose from. I don’t quite think it’s much I don’t like about my city. At night, driving through Atlanta, especially downtown, looks beautiful.
