Meet Omair Ata of Altum Psychiatry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omair Ata.

Hi Omair, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Dr. Omair Ata, and I’m a board certified psychiatrist with a focus on integrative psychiatry. My path into medicine started in college at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where I earned my degree in Neuroscience. I was drawn early on to how the brain and nervous system shape not only behavior and emotion, but also how deeply connected mental health is to the rest of the body.

After completing my bachelor’s degree, I pursued a master’s in Human Environmental Sciences, training that broadened my perspective and strengthened my interest in population health, prevention, and the larger environmental and lifestyle factors that influence wellbeing. That combination of neuroscience and public health oriented thinking made medicine a natural next step.

I went on to medical school at VCOM Auburn, where I completed four years of medical education and clinical rotations. Following medical school, I moved to San Antonio, Texas, and completed my psychiatry residency at Tigmer UIW. Residency was where my clinical foundation truly solidified, working with diverse patient populations and learning how to provide evidence based psychiatric care in complex, real world settings.

After training, I relocated to Georgia and began working as an inpatient psychiatrist. Alongside my clinical work, I’ve had the privilege of teaching and mentoring medical residents and students from PCOM and the Medical College of Georgia in my role as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. Teaching has been a meaningful part of my career. It keeps me engaged academically and reinforces a commitment to thoughtful, high quality patient care.

In 2025, I founded Altum Psychiatry to bring together the best of traditional psychiatry with an integrative, whole person approach. My goal is to look beyond symptom management and focus on identifying contributing factors and root causes, considering medical, lifestyle, and psychosocial influences, so patients receive care that is comprehensive, personalized, and sustainable. Today, through Altum Psychiatry, I’m grateful to serve the Johns Creek area and help individuals move toward lasting mental and physical wellbeing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road, and one of the most defining challenges came early in my residency. I started my psychiatry residency training in July of 2019, and within my first year, the world changed with COVID. That period was marked by a constant sense of uncertainty. There was so much we did not yet understand about transmission, treatment, or long term impact, and healthcare workers were navigating real risk every day while still being expected to show up and care for others.

On a practical level, it meant longer hours, rapid protocol changes, and working in the hospital with the ongoing question of whether you might be exposed or unknowingly carrying the virus. On a personal level, it required managing fear and responsibility at the same time, not only for myself, but also for my patients, my colleagues, and my family.

COVID also intensified what I was seeing clinically. The social isolation, loss, and disruption led to a significant deterioration in many people’s mental health. Anxiety, depression, substance use, and burnout became more common and more severe, and the demand for psychiatric support grew quickly.

One thing I am proud of from that time is that we did not just push through individually. We recognized the emotional toll the pandemic was taking on staff, and we created a support group to help colleagues dealing with burnout and stress. It reinforced a lesson that has stayed with me throughout my career: resilience is not just personal, it is also communal, and meaningful support systems can make a huge difference in how people endure and recover from difficult seasons.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Altum Psychiatry ?
Altum Psychiatry is a private practice I founded in 2025 with a clear mission: to provide high quality, integrative psychiatric care that helps people move beyond symptom management and reach their highest potential. The name is intentional. “Altum” comes from Latin, meaning “highest point” or “elevated,” and it reflects what I want for every patient I work with, which is to feel more grounded, resilient, and capable of living at their best.

What we do and what we specialize in:
At Altum Psychiatry, I work with adults ages 18 and older who are struggling with concerns such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders, PTSD, executive functioning challenges, and stress related burnout. While I provide evidence based psychiatric treatment, what I’m known for is taking the time to understand the full picture of what’s driving someone’s symptoms, not just labeling them and prescribing around them.

What sets us apart:
My approach is integrative, meaning I focus on identifying root causes and contributing factors alongside clinical diagnosis. For example, if someone is not sleeping, the question is not only “what medication can help,” but also “why is sleep disrupted.” We look at sleep routines, circadian rhythm, stress patterns, lifestyle factors, and overall health, then build a plan that may include behavioral changes, targeted strategies, and medication when appropriate. That balance of comprehensive assessment and practical solutions is a key differentiator. We are also a part of the Emory Health Network which is an advantage for patients as well.

Who we serve and what we’re known for:
A major focus of the practice is supporting professionals and high performing individuals in demanding, high stress roles. In many cases, untreated depression, anxiety, trauma, or burnout can quietly limit performance, confidence, and career growth, even for very capable people. I’m passionate about helping these individuals recognize concerns early, address them effectively, and protect both their mental health and long term functioning.

Services and access:
We are credentialed with major insurance companies, and we also offer self pay and concierge options for those who want a more individualized experience and additional flexibility. Regardless of the pathway, the goal is the same: thoughtful, personalized care that supports real progress.

What I’m most proud of?:
Brand wise, I’m most proud that Altum Psychiatry stands for elevated care with a human approach. We prioritize listening, clarity, and collaboration. I want readers to know that our brand is built around helping people feel better in a way that is sustainable, personalized, and rooted in both science and whole person understanding.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can work with me in a few simple ways, and we try to make access as straightforward as possible.

For patients seeking care, the easiest first step is to visit our website at www.altumpsychiatry.com
or call our office at 404-913-3533 to schedule a consultation. We offer both in office appointments and telepsychiatry, which allows us to support patients throughout the state of Georgia and provide care in a way that is convenient and accessible.

For collaboration, I welcome partnerships with other healthcare professionals, especially therapists, primary care physicians, and other clinicians who want coordinated care for their patients. We believe the best outcomes often come from a team based approach, and we prioritize clear communication and collaboration when it supports the patient’s goals.

For those who want to support the work we do, sharing our practice with someone who may benefit, referring patients, or connecting us with aligned community and professional organizations are all meaningful ways to help expand access to integrative, whole person psychiatric care.
