Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar Scott.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Omar. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Back in 2015 me and two my family members were talking about getting together and making music. I said to the family members I can be the manager and you two guys do the music. It made since to me because they were musically talented. I on the other hand, can’t sing or rap but because I have a Pre-Law degree in Legal Studies, we thought I was best fit to do the legal side of the business. So we start setting up meetings to lay things out so everyone can see the vision. Time went on and I went back to the guys around Jan 2016 to find out if they were still interested in building this music team we talked about. By then, I had been reading music books and watching mad hours of YouTube on the music business. So both members had a music video they were shooting for an upcoming album. I was not invited but I still went to the video set to see the production. I never said anything about not being invited, even though I was supposed to be their manager.
So in early 2017, I finally asked what were their reasons for not inviting to their musical events? The answer was “We decided to go with a veteran manager who can help us get our career on track” So I then asked when were y’all going to tell me that I was not part of the team anymore? I never got an answer so I went and started looking for talent. Nobody was really was interested in working with me because I was not known in the musical world. Around the end of 2017, I met an artist by the name of Soul 3LU. I met him through his mom and manager Bobbie Wesley, who was trying to get her son heard. So artist Soul 3LU played some music for his mom and me and we just started smiling at each other. At the time, I had a company First Connect LLC I formed while in college. Me now, being struck by the music, I then changed the name of my company in 2018 from First Connect LLC to Scott Boy Music Group LLC. So now we have a primary artist on the team we just needed to find a producer. I reached out to my cousin Isaac who was a producer in the Miami underground music circuit. We arranged for the two artists to meet and they liked each other style from the start.
So I then went back to the other guys who I started with to let them know I have a record label with two artists now. I asked them did they want to be part of my label but they never joined then. So me and my new team went on to record about 50 songs in a month’s time. I went back to the guys to let them hear our music but nothing changed. Just before we get ready to lay out some music for a studio session, one of the guys from the first group reached out to me and asked can I help him with his music career. By his being family, I set up a meeting at his home with our family. I explained that I’m new to the music industry but I have a passion for music. He understood my mission and signed with our record label. We then booked studio sessions and rehearsed at my house. To protect our team, I then started a music management company First Connect Management. We then registered each artist stage name Soul 3LU, Lowkeii Kidd, Product, for them to conduct business.
On October 23, 2018, our first single from artist Soul 3LU and Lowkeii Kidd title “Gotta Eat” was released. Our first distribution deal was with a company name Ditto Music. We then left Ditto Music to partner with Symphonic Distribution in April of 2019. Since that very first release, our label SBMG has released ten singles and 2 EP’s from all three artists combined. We then left Symphonic Distribution after a year of working them. Our latest single “Hoe Shit” released on 4/1/20 is being distributed by Songtradr, which is out now on all music streaming platforms. The label is getting ready to release music from artist Praduc plus another EP title 3LUKIDD 2 from Soul 3LU and Lowkeii Kidd on 10/23/20. I can say that this journey is a tough ride but it has been fun through all the learning of the music business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth ride. The road has or was rough because I was a rookie CEO in the music business. I had no idea who to ask for help or advice. I had no contacts in the music industry or mentors to guide me.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Scott Boy Music Group is an independent black-owned and operated record label started in 2018. We take an unheard-of artist and build their music careers from the ground up. I’m most proud to be able to see my artist’s vision turn into a reality. What sets me apart from other labels is my will to learn the business from the inside out. Also, we allow our artist freedom to create what they feel.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up in Opa-Locka, Florida, which is a city in Miami Dade County. I grew up hard and tough with little resources. I love sports so I thought I was going to be in the NFL one day. But growing up, I always was a fan of music. I had a few women artists that I was crazy about Anita Baker, Sade, Whitney Houston Toni Braxton. I used to write down and recite all of Eric B. and Rakim songs. I also loved to crack jokes on my homies but it was all love. I was a very smart kid who can understand my school work in just one session. I always was into fashion as well as growing up in the hood.
