Today we’d like to introduce you to Omari “Reality” Bashir.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Omari. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story in the entertainment business started over 30 years ago in Mt. Vernon, NY (hometown of Denzel Washington, Heavy D, Sean “Puffy” Combs and many more) singing in the church choir and playing percussion and the alto saxophone in elementary and middle school. I was ranked All-City and All-County in both instruments. In my early teen years, I moved to Atlanta to pursue my high school football dreams hoping to play in college.
During my senior year in high school, I was recruited by several colleges to play football, but also was presented with an opportunity to pursue music. As fate would have it, I attended high school with future SuperStar Usher Raymond and also with Legendary singer Curtis Mayfield’s children.
Mr. Mayfield’s older son was interested in signing my group, but the label closed its doors for good not long after I graduated. I forfeited the football scholarships and became a full-time recording artist with my group Raw Footage, who at the time was being managed by Usher’s mother and manager Janetta Patton (J Pat).
After riding the ever changing record industry rollercoaster for years, performing with and opening up for major acts and releasing independent music my group disbanded and I started an A&R Consultant and Management Company, Uncut Muzik. Part of my motivation for starting the company was to help up and coming artist and producers achieve their dreams by giving them knowledge, access and the resources needed to develop their careers. Underneath the Uncut Muzik umbrella I’ve worked with countless Execs, Grammy Award Winning Artists and Producers, labels and publishing companies. Notably, I worked as an A&R for Drift City Records, where industry veteran Ian Burke (TLC, Outkast and Xscape) was at the helm (artist Q Parker of 112 and a few others were signed there). After Drift City, I worked with famed executive K. Wales (ABC, 112, Bad Boy and countless others) at his Worldwide Entertainment Company developing new artists. I also worked as VP of an A&R for Grammy Award Winner Anthony Dent’s production company State of Mind Muzic (Destiny Child, Jay-Z and many more).
In the most recent years I’ve been focused on my own clients, platinum producer Nick Fury (T.I, Lil Kim, Nas, Lil Flip, Rick Ross and countless others), producer The Genius Klub (50 Cent, Olivia, Chinx and others), writing team The Elements, HipHop artist Mic Young and Soul Pop artist Wednesday. In the past few years my company has also worked with several reality show celebrities as a booking agent, road or brand manager including Stevie J, Joseline, K. Michelle and Mimi Faust of Love and HipHop. Currently I’m working with founder and CEO of Black Ink, Ceaser Emanuel. I also have a strategic partnership with The Inkkwell Production and Artist Development Company (Jamie Foxx, Tyrese, Musiq Soulchild, Big Boi and many more). I’m also distributing independent music through my Empire Distribution deal.
All I ever wanted to do and achieve in the entertainment business was to help create and develop the stars of tomorrow while creating great music, film/TV projects, guiding young execs and formulating multiple income streams for my company and clients. The future looks more promising now than ever before with the multitude of platforms accessible to creators, fans and consumers. One thing for sure, Reality and Uncut Muzik will be amongst the leaders in the industry!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Most of the struggles have come with failed record deals and failed promises made by execs. I’ve learned in this business it’s not what you know or who you know, but it’s who you know and what they’re willing to do for you and what you can do for them.
Persistence and productive consistency are the main factors in achieving success in this business and in life period. The motto I live by and tell all my clients is “If you don’t work hard for what u want, you deserve what you get!”
Uncut Muzik – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Uncut Muzik is an A&R Consultant, Artist Management and Brand Management Company. We specialize in artist development, business, brand and legal consultation, publishing and distribution. What makes me most proud of my company is the fact that we moved from just creating music to expanding into the TV and film industry by helping to develop shows and aiding in funding projects. What sets us apart is that artist development seems to be a thing of the past with record labels. Which is why we have all these fly by night, one hit wonders and artist with boring stage shows. Here at Uncut Muzik, we not only want our clients to be the next Superstars, we want the fans and consumers to receive high end content while sharing impactful memories of their favorite song or performance.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is determined by meeting, achieving and surpassing your goals! We all have a picture of what the end of the road looks like, but it’s the travel down the road that breeds character and the skills needed to achieve success. I always choose to work with people who are self-motivated and goal oriented with a plan. What I do is help manifest what they’re already building on.
