Today we’d like to introduce you to Omari Tucker.
Omari, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up here on the southwest side of Atlanta, I absorbed all of the cultures that my city had to offer. My love and interest in broadcast journalism came from listening to some of the most popular radio stations, such as V103 and Hot 107.9. As a little girl, I always said that I wanted to be on the radio. I’ve always had such a vibrant personality and definitely a strong opinion, and I don’t mind saying how I feel. I was also blessed with having a way with words, so writing was just natural. I could always express myself better with my pen and paper. These big personality traits play a role in why I live out my dreams now as a 26-year-old. I’ve never been afraid to advocate for myself and take the road less traveled because I know by following the passion that could never steer me in the wrong direction.
I started my journey into the broadcast journalism industry during my undergraduate years at Stillman College, located in Tuscaloosa, AL. While there from 2012-2016, I was a journalism major, and so it was required that we took writing courses and write stories for the school newspaper. I was interested in collaborating with some of my cohorts to create a radio station at the school, but the funding was not there. This lack of necessary tools played a part in obtaining my master’s degree in communications from Alabama A&M University in 2019. I wanted to get a better opportunity to fine-tune my craft and be exposed to more opportunities in my field. While in school for my masters, I felt the calling to create a blog because I felt that my stories and my release of some of the things I was dealing with could help someone else. However, this was very shortlived because I allowed outside opinions to sway me away from sharing my personal stories.
After obtaining my master’s degree in December of 2019, I relocated back to Atlanta from Huntsville, AL. While this was never apart of my plan, it was the best move for me personally. In February of 2020, I was put in contact with Ayesha Bryson and Brittani Hill. They were looking for interns for their brand new show called “Nightmare Radio Show.” Initially, I was brought on as Ayesha’s mentee and a writer for the show. After covering my first event, the listening party for Bankroll Fresh’s “In Bank We Trust,” I was asked to speak about it on the show. From that point on, the rest was history. They loved the way my voice sounded, and they helped me create my own segment on the show entitled “Omari’s Office.” We are now on season 2, Episode 35.
I couldn’t thank God enough and Ayesha and Brittani for taking me under their wings and helping me get my start in the entertainment industry. The grind does not stop, and I can not wait until everyone knows about my name and Nightmare Radio! Don’t sleep because we are the #1 source for cultural information!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Upon graduating with my masters, I envisioned my life being totally different. It is funny because I never intended to move back home to Atlanta. I wanted to relocate to a new city and begin my career in corporate America. Due to the pandemic, all of that was put on hold. The job market is horrible right now. I would never have thought that I would be ten months into this year and still without a consistent income and a permanent job.
Although this year has been the toughest for me so far, I have to give God glory because he has continued to provide for me while I’m in the midst of chasing my dreams. And I believe that while my plans have not gone as I imagined, I know what God has in store for me is so much greater.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
The name of my brand is Omari’s Office, and I am apart of the Nightmare Radio Show family. I like to call myself a media specialist because I do it all. I am a media correspondent and also a freelance writer. I have covered stories for the new and upcoming artists as well as events throughout the city.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe that luck has played any role in my life or the success of my career. Everything that has happened on my journey has been because of God’s divine timing. In my experience, I have grown to learn that God doesn’t bless me with something until I am ready for it and anything that I may think of as a loss was only God protecting me and preparing me for something greater. I have worked hard through investing in my education and now I’m working hard to make my dreams of being a household name in the entertainment industry a reality. So with my faith and my work ethic, I am unstoppable!
