Meet Ormewood Park Illustrator: Beardy Glasses

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beardy Glasses.

Beardy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
They call me Beardy Glasses because of my face. And also because I told them that’s my name.

While working in advertising, I found myself doing a lot of illustration work. Eventually, that grew into my main creative passion project. I see my illustration career as a constantly evolving quest to find the truest form of my creative voice. Each time I sit down to draw it’s a chance to refine my style and grow as an artist.

Has it been a smooth road?
One main struggle is keeping up the pace with social media. It’s seriously bonkers. Everyone is doing so much good work right now, and it’s all instantly available for the world to see. The digital age is a blessing in that it can give you great exposure, but a curse in that there’s a never-ending demand for fresh content. If you fall off the pace for even a moment you lose momentum and fade into the white noise of all the other illustrators out there. I think you have to maintain a sort of dumb optimism to keep going strong. Life lesson: be dumb.

What were you like growing up?
I was pretty quiet as a kid. I loved to draw Batman and Zorro. In middles school, I added a layer of an obnoxious loud funny kid over that. In high school, I skateboarded and played in punk bands. In college, I grew up a little. Now I’m still that kid that likes to draw Batman and Zorro.

I’ve always been a little anxious and overly self-aware, however, I think that can be sort of a creative superpower. It can help to force you to have a sense of humor and to think quickly.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
We lived in one of those urban sprawl neighborhoods surrounded by small pine tree forests. I loved exploring into those woods and pretending the trees were long-necked dinosaurs nodding with the wind.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am planning on doing more illustration and refining my style. I want to approach my social media presence like I would for a brand. There are some exciting changes I will be implementing in 2017 to kick off my next big art push.

I’m excited to see my daughters grow up in Ormewood park, I love our neighborhood.

Also, I would really like to eat a good Cheesesteak later this week.
