Today we’d like to introduce you to Pha Baby.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Birmingham, also that’s where my grassroots beginnings stem from. Life there taught me a lot about the world and molded me to be the hard-working person that I am today because Birmingham is a city that will make you earn your keep, to say the least.
My parents were deaf, so I always had a different journey than other kids, but I learned quickly that I had to make up for what my situation lacked; needless to say, I grew up quickly.
In short, growing up in Bama was molded by adversity with parent-death (mom the very woman I’m named after as Pha’s Baby) at a young age, being inducted into the system, alternating guardianship, sexual/mental/physical abuse, financial hardship, and everything else a young adverse-risk kid could experience under similar circumstances. Shout out to my grandma for holding it down, in the end, raising me and my siblings on a fixed income as well other family members who put in a helping hand. I digress…
But yeah, my journey drove me to hyper-independence for survival and to the arts for an outlet.
I began singing, dancing, writing, and studying the art & business of entertainment unbeknownst to me that I’d ever take it further than an enthusiasm.
I joined dance troupes/teams, auditioned for plays/productions/fashion shows, entered contests, and everything you could think of to be creatively active. When I got picked for teams, won contests, led shows, and starred in productions I realized that I may have been onto something.
I was endorsed as being “really good” by my peers, gained popularity, and so I believed that I was called to be a brand of good products thus requiring me to take my journey in music & entertainment seriously. I then became booked to host events, lead local projects, and became respected as a creative. I later created my own platforms. I have produced and directed music videos, promo videos, a stage play and more.
This is when my own portfolio of creative works under PowerHouse Production Group was birthed and “everybody’s favorite” entertainer Pha (affectionately known as Pha Baby) took on a very real presence in my life. My proudest moment is creating works on my own behalf instead of on behalf of others. I feel this is when I trusted myself to own my own career as an artist. My latest work in my own music video released on YouTube last week and it’s actually a good representation of my storytelling abilities through film.
My journey is still undergoing yet I am grateful to God for my recent and past happenings.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
More specifically beyond my childhood challenges, I must admit there were industry-specific challenges that I’ve faced and continue to face.
I think that my challenges haven’t necessarily been unique to me and are rather common to the indie artist’s career.
Enjoying your own voice, figuring out your own brand, trusting your abilities, and believing that you’re worthy is a battle that I think every artist experiences internally.
Once I got past me, I had to face if I’d be accepted by my social circles which was majorly comprised of professional, religious, and educational relationships of which some did but, to be honest, most didn’t. I learned to be unapologetic about my decisions to be my truest self even if it’s unpopular and to trust the process.
I then ran into the scammers, the dream killers, the manipulative producers, the sexually motivated engineers, the envy-filled casting directors, the janky promoters, the unreasonable gatekeepers, etc… you name it.
It was all necessary and I enjoyed every minute of it.
Please tell us about PowerHouse Production Group Presents “Pha Baby” – what should we know?
My artistry style is motivated by some really great art makers. I aspire to be amongst the heavy hitters, so I’ve studied them on and off-camera. My works as an artist and a content maker has to be a product that one would consider as heavy-hitting.
I’m known for being outside of the box, raw yet satisfying, real, unfiltered, both as an artist and as a content maker. I push envelopes and challenge a bigger than average quality out of myself as well as others that I work with. I’m a large energy and I operate with a spirit of excellence with every project as if it were my own even if it’s not. I write dope music, I put on a good show, I own every detail all the way to the set design as well as my personal styling, I direct that same energy towards any production/project I’m booked for.
PowerHouse Princess of the South is a regionally acclaimed self-titled that I don’t think anybody would argue. My gifts were granted to me “without repentance” the Bible says and so they are the things that make me powerful. I can’t swim, jump from buildings, skate, or any of that other superhero stuff, but sing, write, act, dance, model, host, style, direct, and produce? I unapologetically do declare that Bae got that!!! I’ve been paid and published in those areas and can’t wait for my platforms to get bigger… it has begun.
My current most-esteemed endeavor includes my debut single “Love’s F’D Anchor” available everywhere music is streamed along with the sexy musical cinema brought to you by PHPG, “Pha Baby-Love’s F’D Anchor the official video” now available on YouTube.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Jesus Christ that list is wide yet narrow! I hate even answering this question beyond encapsulating them all under the overly-used opener in many acceptance speeches, “First, I’d like to give thanks and honor to God, my family, and all of my fans and supporters because, without you, there’d be no me,” lol.
But I’ll keep it cute for the sake of this read.
Um so, of course, firstly, I’d like to give honor and thanks to God (sorry not sorry, lol) but then, nextly and not in any particular order, I’d have to acknowledge my GMA for being my rock.
My day 1 supporters/collaborators and they know who they are. If you’ve ever recorded me, played an instrument for me, sang behind/with me, casted for me, performed/danced/modeled/acted for me, interviewed me, shot for me, invested in me, photographed me, sent me beats or produced for me, came to a show, featured me, shouted me out, sent an encouraging word, shared my posts, downloaded my music, hired me, prayed for me, or any of that supportive stuff trust me I know who you are and I have you to thank for the motivation I needed to keep going. Thank you! An attempt to name you all would be a failed attempt.
