Phillip, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
BU by Phillip (pronounced “BE YOU”) came about as a response to my own personal journey. Starting at a young age, I felt very displaced and didn’t really fit in. I wasn’t exempt from being bullied or picked on and as a result, I began to have a very disappointing outlook towards the person who was staring back at me in the mirror. I have always found the need to be inspired, encouraged and shown a resource for hope. Being a singer/songwriter I used music as an outlet to simply encourage myself. The funny thing about encouraging yourself is that once you do it, you tend to encourage others along the way. 🙂
There has been an inspirational thread that has permeated throughout all of my careers. From music to being a celebrity make-up artist, to a marketing director – each of these helps someone to realize their dreams; to think bigger; believe harder, and be even more inspired.
It was clear that all of my gifts and talents, titles and expertise was focused on being passionate about impacting to those who may not think themselves valuable; who may think less of themselves because they do not look the same, act the same, act the same, live the same. Who are different.
I remember my journey took me to some very difficult places which included addiction and suicidal thoughts. Living a life in which you feel that you are invisible or simply overlooked, or less than is a devastating life indeed, but it doesn’t have to stay that way.
BU by Phillip celebrates the authentic you. The brand encourages individuals to embrace who they are – the braces, the freckles, the wheelchair, the hair, the “WHATEVER”, and know that they are special, they are valuable and that they belong. With a custom hashtag of #nocopycats, BU by Phillip applauds the uniqueness of each person. Whether it is on the t-shirt, or with the official logo cap, the message is clear, “You’re the best you in the world,” so be yourself!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Once I decided to launch the apparel line, it was fairly smooth. I think what made it smoother than usual is the passion to share it. Many times there are projects that you work on that are just “projects” and often the fun or passion is simply missing.
Creating BU by Phillip has engaged me to focus on the end user – the person who, not so much is going to BUY the apparel, but the person who needs the “message.” It’s a two-fold brand. The message if first for the one who wears it; then second for the person who “sees” them wearing it. So, you not only encourage yourself, but you encourage others in the process. (See how I just rewound that phrase! LOL)
I will say a challenge in any launch or brand is remaining authentic and being clear with your messaging. In a world of sensationalized social media, it can be easy to get ‘likes” and “follows” with gimmicks. However, remaining true to the end user and the “purpose” for the brand keeps all of those things in perspective.
Probably the biggest struggle along the way is the anticipation of wanting it to connect. Anticipation can often turn into discouragement if expectations are not met when we think they should be. It’s always necessary to remember that “ISSA PROCESS!” 🙂

BU by Phillip is an inspirational apparel brand encouraging EVERYONE to be who they are with no apologies. PERIOD! Love on yourself!
As someone with a strong Marketing background, I am the designer of the brand and creative director. The brand specializes in encouraging the celebration of authenticity, and all of the slogans, images, and words associated with the brand are geared around that focus.
The brand is known for consistency and remaining true to its intent. It is so encouraging to have individuals DM on Instagram or another social media platform and tell you that your marketing post brightened their day. That is what it is all about.
BU by Phillip is set apart from many brands because of the story and the passion behind the messaging. It is not just a t-shirt. It is much more than just a hat. It is a culture of support for those who need it the most. It is a partnering opportunity for those who want to support those who need its message. It’s an inspirational movement.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important character or quality that is most important for my personal success is authenticity and integrity. Without being authentic, I will lack the passion that it takes to move forward. Without the integrity, I will lack the character needed to sustain any work or endeavor.
It also takes courage. There is a courage that came with the development of this brand that I clearly recognized. This brand IS my journey. This brand IS my story. This brand IS my answer. The message is for ME first, then for the world. “Phillip, BU!” See, I need that message every day, and my prayer is as I encourage myself with each graphic, image, and piece of this line, others will be encouraged also.
