Today we’d like to introduce you to Phnewfula Frederiksen.
Phnewfula, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started Happy Mango 9 years ago shortly after my son was born. I found it difficult to find all of the eco products I wanted in one space. I also didn’t find any places that were particularly welcoming of ALL people. I wanted to create a space where you were welcomed no matter what level of green you were at.
I kept the store online for 6 years and continued to work full time. Once I had my daughter, I quit my job and focused on Happy Mango full time. We did festivals and opened a pop up in Krog Street market to test the market. Turns out, Happy Mango was well received so we looked for a permanent home and found one in Kirkwood.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being an entrepreneur is never a smooth road. Being an entrepreneur with two kids is an entirely different ball game. The challenges of balancing family and work is still one that I haven’t mastered. I am certainly getting better lol.
The other challenge most small businesses face is just making sure that their community knows that they are here and that they are awesome! Happy Mango is no different. We are constantly trying to make sure we are in front of all of the parents to be.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Happy Mango story. Tell us more about the business.
Happy Mango specializes in eco-friendly baby, pregnancy, and kids products. We specialize in happiness. We want to make sure that we provide the happiest experience you can have while shopping. We have absolutely held and bounced all of the babies so mom and dad can shop. We make sure that we are able to make sure that you are getting the products that best fit your lifestyle. That is really important in choosing cribs and strollers. We have helped a number of parents make better choices based on knowledge they were provided.
We are proud to be part of the community we serve. We are all moms or moms to be. We all live in the area and we get it. If a mom has questions about nursing and wants to talk about that we can. We are really proud to live the lifestyle that we are selling.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
No luck. Hard work, prayer, smart work, great customers who love to spread the word, and more hard work.
