Today we’d like to introduce you to Pkay Oldham.
Pkay, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been into crafting, art and designing even as a child, I’ve always been able to turn little to nothing into something. I went to college for Graphic Design with a minor in Fine Art Photography after graduating Undergrad I then went to Graduate school for Comm Arts & Digital Media and following graduating Graduate school, I landed a job as a Graphic Designer. It wasn’t until this past Christmas when I started my true hands-on crafting journey. Christmas 2018 I was gifted a Cricut Cutting Machine, this machine allows me to apply vinyl to cups, mugs, glasses, cars, t-shirts, anything you can think of! I thought that it would only be something I’d play with to past the time or just have it as a hobby until I started posting my work on social media and started getting a lot of requests and orders. It caught me so off-guard because I never even dreamed of owning a business, I had no idea where to start but luckily I have supportive family and friends who helped guide and lead the way to start my LLC. 11 months later, On October 3rd, 2019 I was approved for my LLC and I feel like that was just the beginning for Project Chick.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the 11 months I’ve been crafting, I can truly say the road has been smooth. I haven’t run into any struggles lately. I think the biggest struggle I’ve had has been internal and me doubting myself when I get certain orders. I question myself a lot and think to myself “Should I accept this project? Is this something I can pull of? Will the customer hate it?” But I’m learning to trust myself and have more faith in myself. Creative block has also been a struggle of mine. Creative block is an artist’s worst enemy but I’ve found ways to push through it which includes me doing research, trying new projects, or spend hours on Pinterest getting inspired.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Project Chick – what should we know?
The name of my business is Project Chick, LLC. I’m a crafter and a maker. I also offer Graphic Design services but I’m mainly a DIYer and maker of all things! I’m known for creating custom T-shirts, Water bottles, Cards, Creating Party decor, and also making signs. I’m most proud of my journey here because I’ve never been the type to post my work and brand my business, even when I would create logos and party flyers on the side in college I would never go looking for business or talk about the things I offer. But now I’m actually putting myself out there and creating a brand for me.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Passion! Definitely Passion, Having passion for what I do is the one thing that’s going to allow me to be the most successful crafter and maker. Without passion, I wouldn’t be able to deliver the amazing crafts I’ve been delivering to the world.
