Today we’d like to introduce you to Porshia Evans.
Porshia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have loved makeup since I was a little girl. When I went places with my mom and she looked in the backseat, I would already have her lipstick on. Although I’m not a makeup artist, I still love the art of cosmetics and seeing what new trends and techniques are out. This inspired me to want my own cosmetics line.
After brainstorming for a while, I finally launched Glam L’amour in July 2018 during several unfortunate events that were happening. Prior to that, I had a decent job working from home, great benefits, the typical perks, but I always felt like I wanted more. So, when we got a conference call that the department would be closing that same day, that was the sign I needed to go into my own business.
While dealing with that, a few weeks later we received news that my dad had a cancerous tumor and needed to begin treatment. This put me in such a bad space because my dad is the strongest person I know, he’s never sick. Of course, he was the only person that stayed calm through it all. With everything going on, my parents continued to encourage me and push me to go through with my idea. I was extremely nervous about starting something new. I didn’t know how it would be received, would it work, so many questions went through my head. The day I announced it on my social media accounts, I went shopping so I could be distracted from checking notifications every few minutes LOL! The feedback and support was so amazing. I literally had tears in my eyes every time a new share or comment popped up. As of today, Glam L’amour is still growing and doing really good. I’m also happy to add that my dad’s surgery went amazing and the tumor was completely removed!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business is fun but not easy! Especially trying to get your brand out there when there are so many businesses just like yours. One of the struggles has been social media following. I have had several social media pages and once you start a new page, it is hard to gain all of those followers back. That seems to be one of the leading factors of promoting your brand and without it, it can be challenging. However, there are still lots of ways to promote and network, you just have to work a little harder which is no problem at all.
Glam L’amour – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Glam L’amour Cosmetics currently feature a variety of glossy and matte lipsticks and shimmering lipglosses. I am also working on creating a highlighter and in the future I plan to incorporate skincare. Glam L’amour makes me proud because it is something I’ve wanted to do but didn’t know I would ever have the courage to step out on faith and make it happen. I’m not doing it just to say I sell a product, I have loved it since day 1 and never feel overwhelmed or like it’s getting to be too much.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally think success is when you have reached a point where you find pleasure in what you’re doing and it’s not just considered work. No matter how much money you make or how many people know about it, success is being happy doing what you love.
