Today we’d like to introduce you to Quanella Jordan.
Quanella, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started this journey in early 2000 because I was a very young mother of two and needed childcare for my own two however childcare was something I couldn’t afford it the time. So I started keeping kids at home made money and my children had fun also . I worked a few retail job however it wasn’t my passion I loved the feeling of being with children. Around 2006 I moved to Atlanta and became a live in Nanny my first Nanny job for a traveling singer ( this job thought me a lot in a bad way ) . She had 4 boys I was Cooking and cleaning and it was cool sometimes , it was me and my kids in 1 room in the basement lol thinking back on this job and lessons I learned I thank Jesus I made it . Anywoo about year 1.5 of working with this family I start meeting and talking to a few other nannies in the neighborhood I find out the family I was nannying for only paid me half of what other nannies were making . After that nanny job was over !! I started school no one else would take vantage of me .. I started taking childcare classes working part time at daycare centers all of it so I could become better at what I love. No matter what job I was working at making good money working with kids has always been my passion. its 2020 and every one calls me NannyQ the baby whisperer my husband tells me all the time I have a gift when it comes to working with kids between newborn to 10 years old lol lol . I been in my field for over 10 years almost 15 years now and I’m also a Doula ( birthing, breastfeeding and postpartum Doula ) now. I also volunteer as a CASA a few times a month too . you can say when it comes to working with children I love everything about it. Children keep me young and keep me laughing… and when I bring my work home my family loves it.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth WHERE !!! I’ve had to take people to court to get my money had parents leave their children with me past closing hours without calling then get mad because I change them a late fee. been fired because I wouldn’t have sex with one couple. been in the middle of a divorce. you name it, however, I will never stop what I love doing.
Please tell us about business.
Gig’s Nanny and Childcare Service specializes in high profile clients and families that travel and move around a lot due to their career. The name of the company means God’s inspirational Gifts I like to think every Nanny that works for Gig’s is a gift from god and we only had a few bad gifts over the years lol .. Gig’s also works with other Doulas in the Atlanta area. I myself am a Doula so I’m able to help new mothers with learning to breastfeeding ,Help with any sign of postpartum depression and making sure that my families can trust Gig’s all around . What I’ve learned over this 10 plus years of business a lot of ppl need someone to be a ear to just too listen that’s all . listen to the Mother /father needs and Checking on them just as much as the new baby why because a lot of times no one asks the mother /father how they doing or checks on the older sibling it’s all about the baby. And Gig’s wants to make sure every family member is good even the dog . Gig’s has made me cry many nights with all the bad contracts with families some months not working at all however it makes me very proud I started this company and I didn’t give up I didn’t go in a different field because my flesh eyes where seeing all the bad things with Being a new business owner I had to look at a lot of things with my spiritual eyes . Gig’s made me better my self for my children to give a business to them that would make millions over the years and to show other young mothers you can do anything with Jesus on your side , and in front of you !! So many times over the past 10 plus years I wanted to give up and find a corporate job that was making more money Because childcare can be good one min and bad the next . however every time Jesus made a way for Me and my company. what I like to think sets up apart from other services our determination to make sure every family we work with Doesn’t feel like Gig’s is just there to work No we are there to love on the whole as we our job there to make a difference you need prayer no problem need to cry it out ok I have the stop watch ready cause after that good cry let’s talk about the plan! Gig’s isn’t a Nanny Service we come with love ,skills and patience. every Nanny I hire isn’t just looking for job they want to make a difference in a family life that will help .
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
A few of the jobs that I stared I would’ve told them no. Other than that I love everything about what I do. The tears and long nights all of it .
