Meet Quenshala Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Quenshala Thomas.

Quenshala, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was younger I didn’t like my hair so I would cut out my dolls hair and braid it into my hair and do the other little girls hair in the neighborhood and as crazy as it sounds it was actually kinda cute! Until one day at camp, I went swimming and my dolls hair piece was floating around in the water, I was just really interested in being able to change and express myself and help other do the same through hair as I got older I continued to perfect my craft by experience only no one taught me how to do hair until I start looking on YouTube and always put a twist on some of the styles I saw so that they can fit my clients faces, and head/head shape along with doing hair though, I was also really interested in cooking. I wanted to attend school to become a chef but I had to work a job to survive young so I couldn’t focus on school only I had to provide for myself. I took recipes I learned from my mom and grandmother and out my own twist on them I became vegan later on in life and I realized that people think eating healthier means sacrificing the food you grew up with and having to settle for bland veggies and it’s just simply not that I love to make vegan soul food and bbqs and macaroni and homemade cakes and cheeses and these are recipes that come straight from my brain, honestly I don’t know how to explain why I know how to put things together I just imagine what the flavors would taste like together and I follow some of the same recipes that wouldn’t be vegan and replace everything with a plant based alternative I realized that these two things that come natural to me are some of the same things that can help keep me afloat all while helping those around me with their health and appearance. I really love the look on my clients face when I tell them the food is vegan or that they love their hair. Realizing that I don’t have to work for someone else to become successful and that I have people who believe in me and will support me encouraged me to save up my money for a year and leave my corporate job to fully focus on my business

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I faced some hard times with my mom not being in the best of health having to see her like that and not being able to help her as I wanted to because I was a child, it did make me go harder by working in jobs I could get but I always hated them and the managers always trying to under pay and over work you as well as facing homelessness but still over coming and graduating high school on time! Graduating a technical program called year up facing adversities of a psychotic stalker significant other and no one would believe the things he did to me and being separated from my family and throughout all that I still remained sane I stood my ground and remained focus on my why! And the bigger picture now my mom is better we have an apartment together and I continue to help her and make sure she remains on the right path in life me and my family are reunited and I’m starting up my successful business and soon will also be helping my mom start up hers

Please tell us about your business.
I have three business Queentrapsoulskitchen, queentrapsoulshair, Queentrapsoulsnails.

I specialize in doing hair, cooking food and vegan food and just recently I started doing nails I run these three businesses out of my home and what I’m most known for is doing hair, only because that was the first one of my business that got popular because I started doing that first when I was 11 years old. I’m most proud of the fact that when my clients come to my home that they leave at peace I become somewhat of a therapist I put on meditation music, offer drinks, and calming hospitality burn some sage or essential oils and even just sit in silence letting them detach and the looks on their faces when they see their hair just fills me with joy it’s like they come alive or the happiness in their voice when they see their nails or eat their food makes me keep going I make all my clients feel welcomed and like family and so does my family I believe that’s what sets me apart the changing the way a person feels on the inside and on the outside brings me joy it’s not about the money for me it’s about educating people about their health and not changing someone but highlighting their natural beauty I just so happen to get paid off doing that

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is feeling free putting on my roller blades and skating in Pediment Park. Feeding the ducks bread and chips from Willy’s and at the end of the day after rolling down tall green hills of grass that felt like mountains. Drifting off to sleep watching the busy rods of traffic on the way home but feeling still and at peace inside. And then getting carried into the house to finish my nap. No worries about tomorrow.
