Meet Quinita Morrow of Ms. Morrow’s Marketing Class in Locust Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Quinita Morrow.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Quinita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began my teaching journey 12 years ago. Believe it or not, teaching was only a 1-2 year plan for me that turned into my passion. I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and a Master’s Degree in Management and Human Resources, so teaching technically wasn’t apart of the plan. As a first year teacher, I had already had two degrees but neither of them was in education. So with that being said, I went back for a few additional courses through a nontraditional route where I obtained my Teacher Certification through Georgia TAPP (Teacher Alternative Preparation Program). After becoming a “highly qualified” educator, teaching no longer is a job for me, it is something that I absolutely love to do! I tell people all the time, there is never a dull moment in my day. I couldn’t imagine what my life would be like without my kids. They are my entire world. They keep me on my toes and considering that I teach Marketing, our day-to-day conversations are endless!

As far as my platform goes, I choose to bring in guest speakers to help reiterate the lesson I’ve taught. The thing is, everyone has a similar message, it’s just a completely different story. That is what makes it all so much more amazing! It’s one thing hearing the lesson from me (the teacher) but when my guest speakers come in and share their stories and life experiences over what I just taught, that makes it all hit home for my kids. So for me, that’s what teaching is all about. Getting my kids to understand, to see and hear from the mouths of individuals living the lives so many of my kids desire to have, makes everything so rewarding for me. Whether it is a guest speaker that owns the local bakery down the street, a publicist, an NFL/NBA player, rapper, singer, poet, producer, actor or actress, it doesn’t matter. Each of my guest speakers are unique and they all have a story to share. Although many people know me as the “celebrity teacher” because I bring in celebrity guest speakers each year. I do take my kids’ request and I try very hard to meet their request (as long as it is within reason of course).

I started my guest speaker series (consistently) about four years ago. I started a little before then with one speaker a year, then I moved up the next year to 3 speakers a year to where I am today. Currently, I have a guest speaker each day of the week except for Wednesdays and that’s only because we have a different bell schedule on that day. It’s a challenge but each day brings on a new journey. Not to mention my kids really enjoy our speaker series.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Teaching is never a smooth road. Every day is a challenge because every day brings on something different. For me, since I’ve started my journey of having a guest speaker each day, I’ve had more challenges than anything. My kids use to think it was easy. They would come to class and see a speaker but not realize all the background preparation it took. However, I am very transparent with them. I let them know the hard work that goes into bringing someone in front of them on a day to day basis. For instance, if I send out 125 emails every Monday morning upon arriving to work, I may hear back from 5 of them. That may not seem like a lot considering I sent out another 120 emails, but those 5 make a world of a difference to my kids. As I stated, I’m very transparent with them, I let them know when a guest wants to come but their schedule just will not allow them to. I let them know when a speaker cancels on me, the day before and some the day of. I explain to them that life happens and that’s okay. Since I have such an open relationship with my kids when it comes to our guest, somedays they come to me and say, “Ms. Morrow, it’s okay. You did all you could do and we know you did.” That’s what makes me strive even harder for them. Some speakers my kids have requested, I have not been able to reach. Some for me are impossible. However, my kids say “but Ms. Morrow, anything is possible and if anyone can do it, it’s you” so I have to remind them about being realistic all at the same time. I never like to disappoint my kids because, at this point, they truly look forward to having a guest speaker. Some days are better than others but each day brings on a new journey so you just learn to keep moving forward.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ms. Morrow’s Marketing Class – what should we know?
I am a high school marketing teacher at Luella High School in Locust Grove, GA. What makes me proud to be apart of the Luella family are my kids! I absolutely love the kids that I teach. Words can’t truly express how amazing they are! From their work ethic to their behavior, to their overall goals in life, they are destined to be great! What sets me apart from other teachers is the platform I choose which is bringing in guest speakers to speak with my students. I have had some truly amazing guest throughout the years. Some of my guests include DC Young Fly, Lalamilan, TI, Brittany Renner, Zoie, Rotimi, Shayla Cowan, Jazze Pha, Vena E., Angela Robinson, Renee Lawless, Jay Morrison, Ernestine Johnson Morrison, DJ Greg Street. Pierre, St. Beauty, Kash Howard, Catherine Brewton, Kenny Burns, Dice, Kandi Burres, Porsha Williams, Phaedra Parks, Shamea Morton and the list goes on and on. It has definitely been a blessing! Because my class is a nontraditional marketing class, each school year, each week, each day is a new beginning because you just never know who may show up to Ms. Morrow’s Marketing Class 😉

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The quality/characteristic I feel is most important to success is having passion. For me, my passion is the love I have for my kids. I didn’t become a teacher because of the pay. I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children. I truly love what I do each. I do not view what I do as a job because for me, it’s FUN and I enjoy it. Personally, I strongly feel that people believe in my kids because they see how much I believe in them. Some of my speakers want to be apart of the movement that’s taking place within the four walls of my classroom because of my passion for my kids. It’s truly magical! My kids have some pretty amazing dreams. Their thoughts and concepts that they share when speakers enter into my room are truly unexplainable. So for me, I’d have to say my love and passion for my kids is what has made me so successful in getting the speakers that I’ve had and will continue to have.
