Meet R. Jamar

Today we’d like to introduce you to R. Jamar.

Hi R., thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my music career as a college freshman in my dorm room. I had just received my refund check and I used the money to purchase my first mic and piano. Initially, it was just a hobby and my goal was to build a team of artists around me that would use me as their primary producer. But at the time my talent level didn’t match my expectations (I sucked lol) so it was difficult finding artists who wanted to work me. So after about 6 months of rejection, I decided that I would teach myself to rap, that way I could just use my own beats. Over the course of the next four years, I spent my between class, music, and building my name around the state as a college party host/promoter. Everything was going good and then the pandemic hit. It was during this time that I made the decision to focus solely on music. Since then I’ve dropped 2 EPs and been on two nationwide tours.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve had to deal with rejection, sleepless nights, writer’s block, being broke at times so that I could fund my dream, being homesick sometimes, etc. I’ve also had multiple friends pass away within the last 2 years but I just use every obstacle in my life as motivation to keep me going.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself a songwriter/producer. I have the ability to rap, sing, and create melodies for myself and other artists. One of my biggest strengths is my ear for music. I usually can hear an artist’s voice and create a song for them in under an hour. I am most proud of my personal growth artistically. When I first started making music didn’t know how to properly structure a song, use word play and metaphors to articulate myself or understand the power of vocal control. I don’t think there’s anything major that sets me apart from the others. I just try to paint my life the best way I can. Everyone has a story, I just hope resonates with the masses.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think one of the biggest risks I’ve taken was the decision to pursue music, There’s no true handbook on how to do this so every day I’m moving with faith. I’m learning all of this as I go with the hope that one day it’s all worth it. I like taking risks because I know either I’m going to win or learn. There’s always an opportunity for growth when you’re constantly taking risks and growth is something I strive to do daily.
