Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Calhoun.
Rachael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Rachael but I prefer to go by “Roxxy”, I’m 26 years old from Birmingham, Al. It all started in college while attending Alabama A&M University where I majored in Communications Media. I started off my college journey undecided on what I wanted to do specifically until one of my professors told me about an internship at a gospel radio station. I was skeptical at first only because I didn’t think I would fit in but it ended up being the opportunity I needed to get out of my comfort zone! In that moment, I made it MY mission to become a part of the media industry. My main focus after college was to land a radio job! With God’s grace I did just that!
I started working in the promotions department a little over a year at 95.7 Jamz in Birmingham, Al. My time was cut short and I was devastated! But I didn’t let that stop me! That’s when B.A.E Talk Media was born. In 2018, my friend and business partner Allana Reid started our podcast together (B.A.E Talk Podcast) where we highlight entrepreneurs and independent artists from our hometown while also discussing relevant topics. With both of studying communications in college we decided to broaden our horizons by turning our platform into a media company serving our community, providing entertainment, and connecting people with opportunities.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not! There have been times where I felt like giving up on this career. At one point I actually did. I moved to Mobile, Al to work a regular 9-5 job in sales. I even thought about pursing a second degree. But with a lot of prayer and self-reflection I ended up quitting that job and moving to Georgia for a fresh start. I told myself after quitting that job that I would never work a regular 9-5 job ever again…. I haven’t since then.
B.A.E Talk Media – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a media correspondent/personality. I specialize in interviewing, networking & engaging with new people regarding the entertainment industry. I am most proud of our consistency and growth. We’ve come such a long way from when we first started. What sets us apart from others is that we build real relationships with each and every individual we come in contact with! We don’t just go to these events and interview people but we build authentic relationship with everyone even celebs to the point where they want to work with us.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory has to be when me, my siblings, and cousins use to sing and dance like we were in an actual real group! Lol… seriously we really use to make up songs and dance to them.
