Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Renew.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
In 2010, I was working a job that I knew wasn’t for me. I really needed a career change. My job was out of my home and there were many instances during my downtime that I became bored. Being a creative person, I would go “stir-crazy” if there wasn’t enough to occupy my time. My husband, who knew I loved makeup, suggested that I start looking at makeup videos on YouTube. The first video that popped up was Kandee Johnson’s story of how she got started in the makeup industry. Even though I didn’t know of her at the time, I was so inspired by her story. However, I thought “there’s no way I can do that living in the small-town area I’m in.” But, after finding and meeting a fellow makeup artist in my area, I discovered that freelance makeup artists actually exist! Unfortunately, though, I still let fear and nerves keep me from taking that leap.
Finally, I talked myself into attending a few workshops at Atlanta Makeup Academy in 2012. From there, I decided I wasn’t going to waste any more time. I enrolled at Southeastern Esthetics Institute in Columbia, SC and received my national certification after a six week course. I was so excited to finally be on my dream career path. While I was attending school, I would call on as many friends and family as I could to let me practice on them in addition to the work I was doing in class. Fast forward to today, I have been a freelance makeup artist for almost six years now. I have had the pleasure of applying makeup for brides and bridal parties, prom, pageants, and senior photos. I have also worked with multiple photographers doing makeup for boudoir, family portraits, business headshots, etc. I really enjoy working with people and love being able to see my work in print. It has been an amazing experience thus far, and I look forward to where my journey takes me in the future!
Please tell us about your art.
When I was in high school, I was diagnosed with cystic acne. This affected my life in many ways, most of all my self-esteem. At that time, of course, I did not know much at all about makeup and which products were best for my skin type, etc. This was a big driving force behind me wanting to learn all I could about proper makeup techniques and application. This, coupled with the fact that I have loved and always wanted to look like “Barbie,” it’s no wonder I ended up choosing makeup as my career!
I take pride in making my clients look and feel like the best version of themselves, without turning them into a person they wouldn’t recognize. Enhancing their natural beauty without trying to change their overall look. Bringing out their best features and minimizing anything they may be self-conscious about. In addition to makeup application, I also offer individual makeup lessons for anyone who wants to learn more about applying their own makeup. I meet a lot of women who do their own makeup, but may need help with using the correct colors, products and/or specific techniques that are complimentary to their individual needs. I am always happy to equip someone with the skills they need to look and feel their best.
My philosophy is simple: listen to my client and make sure they get what they want out of their makeup experience with me, regardless of whether I am applying their makeup or teaching them to apply it themselves.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Many areas, including mine, have small business gatherings where local business owners/artists get together to network and exchange business ideas and opportunities. This is a great way to meet like-minded individuals that may be able to help you grow your business and vice-versa. I would recommend researching Facebook groups, community boards, etc. to find out if there are similar meetings in your area.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My portfolio can be found on my website, Instagram and Facebook. I also participate in various bridal expos in the Augusta area from time to time. If you, or someone you know ever has the need for a professional makeup artist, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to working with you!
