Today we’d like to introduce you to Raina Ball.
Hi Raina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began when I decided to pause my pursuit of a bachelor’s degree and enroll in Cosmetology school. Though I was uncertain about what the future held, I committed myself to achieving my goal. I recognized that a career in Cosmetology could offer me a flexible income that I could manage on my own terms. Little did I know it would ignite a true passion within me!
For over eight years now, I have been doing hair, establishing a robust clientele and specializing in color and locs, earning the title of loctician. This year, I took a significant step forward by becoming a newly licensed cosmetology instructor. I continue to own my salon, where I not only provide services but also offer classes, sharing my knowledge and skills with others. Working with hair allows me to unleash my creativity and celebrate the beauty my clients already have. As I progressed, I witnessed my own transformation. I began to trust my skills and gained confidence, which empowered me to be the mother my two children needed—all while running my own salon.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth in my career. I’ve faced challenges with client retention and building my clientele, all while navigating the demands of being a single mother. It’s been a constant balancing act, and I’m still figuring it all out. However, I can confidently say that I’ve come a long way from where I started.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in locs and natural twists, and I take great pride in the growth I’ve achieved in my work from where I began. What sets me apart from other stylists is my consistency and the flexibility I offer in my schedule. Despite the demands of being a mother and a sometimes hectic schedule, I’m willing to work late for my clients to accommodate their needs.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that not everyone is meant to be your client, and it’s perfectly okay to let certain clients go. Not all money is good money.
