Today we’d like to introduce you to Ralph Barber Jr.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started when I was a chubby kid and my grandfather said, “Boy, Your eating too much. Go run around the block.” After that, I started playing sports. I played football, basketball, track, and tennis.
After graduating from high school, I received a football scholarship to Jamestown University. I graduated with a B.S. in physical education and health. After graduating, I moved to Atlanta to become a teacher. I soon realized that wasn’t for me and plan B turned into plan A.
I became a GM of a big box gym and made the most money of my life at the age of 25. Once I realized how much time and effort I was giving to make that money, I QUIT! I told myself, “If I can put this much time and effort into myself, there no way I can fail.”
I have pushed to climb new levels within my career. I’ve been a traveling trainer, worked out of my complex gym, rented out a gym, and have been a part of many events around the nation. It’s taken 10 years but I have recently accomplished my dream and goal of being a gym owner. That’s where we are today and I’m looking forward to mastering this new journey.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh no! Clients come and go all the time. Once I started looking at myself as a business and not a trainer, things started to click. Training was the easy part; getting clients was the hard part. I had to break down the parts of a business and apply them to training. Like the marketing, payment structures, styles of training, nutrition plants, etc.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fitted 4 Fitness – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I set my clients up for success. I take them through an assessment where we sit down and talk about their goals, past history and what they expect. I take them through a light workout and measure their current fitness levels. Afterward, I give my professional diagnosis of what we need to do to get them to where they want to go.
I progress the client according to there assessment and their personal fitness goals. I’m not a drill sergeant. I’m here to push you but not take you over the edge. That’s the difference between me and other trainers. People want to finish a workout without throwing up. That’s why I take EVERYONE through an assessment so that I know how to progress them within their own customized program.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I just became a gym owner in October 2018. I’m looking forward to collaborating with other trainers that would like to progress their careers at Fitted 4 Fitness. I’m excited to be on the cast of Flexx Atlanta, coming summer 2019 on Amazon Network. There’s is a lot of opportunity for growth and I’m looking forward to it all.
