Today we’d like to introduce you to Raquel Obumba.
Raquel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My parents exposed me to real estate at an early age. They owned and managed several rental properties in California. I assisted as much as I could, given my age, when the properties needed to be refreshed for a new tenant.
Fast forward to summer 2006. I had just graduated from Spelman College and planned to start my corporate consulting career in August (because I wanted to have a summer vacation). However, my plans for starting in August changed to an unknown date. Feeling lost and nervous about not having a job, a family member recommended I use my free time to earn a real estate license, as a means to keep busy and establish a career alternative should the corporate consulting job not work out. I completed my course in October 2006 and placed my license with the first brokerage I worked for in December 2006. I did end up starting the corporate consulting job and then decided real estate would be a side hustle.
Throughout the time I worked in consulting, I represented several buyers in the purchase of their homes. Upon my acceptance into a Master’s program at the University of Michigan, I put my real estate license on inactive status due to me relocating temporarily to Michigan.
Upon my graduation in 2012, I returned to Atlanta and kick-started my real estate career again while working for a non-profit housing developer.
In 2015, a good friend of mine approached me about starting a property management company together. Upon further research, it was determined if we wanted to be a legitimate property management company the company needed to operate under a real estate broker. However, neither of the brokers we were working for at the time supported a property management. From there, I determined I was eligible to sit for the Georgia Real Estate Broker’s exam and the idea of Millennial Properties Realty was born. We decided not only would we focus on property management, but also we decided we wanted to be a full-service brokerage offering buyer, seller, and investor representation and to build a team of Realtors who were looking for a brokerage different from the large brokerage firms and driven by professionalism, teamwork, flexibility, broker support, and coaching.
Today, Millennial Properties Realty boasts of having a team of nine Realtors and over $6.7 million in sales since officially opening our doors in May 2016. Our mission is to help clients build generational wealth through real estate.
Has it been a smooth road?
The field of real estate always presents its challenges. From dealing with difficult scenarios to unpredictable circumstances, no two real estate transactions are alike. We definitely have been having smooth sailing to date overall and we attribute our success to experience, patience, and professionalism. We do not know what the future will hold, but we take each transaction in stride, work through the kinks, and help our clients get to their ultimate goal.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Millennial Properties Realty specializes in buyer, seller, investor, and landlord representation. We take our clients from the pre-approval or listing to the closing table and beyond. We have experience working with a range of clients from the novice first-time homebuyers to veteran real estate investors. We are knowledgeable about various programs (down payment assistance and loan products) which can ease the financial needs to become homeowners. One aspect that sets Millennial Properties Realty apart is we have several Realtors on our team who have renovation management experience. Not only can they represent themselves in the purchase of an investment property, but also they can facilitate the renovation then turn around and list the house themselves. Truly a one-stop shop!
Additionally, our Realtors work as a team. We know if one team member has a big win, we all win. This means when one team member needs back up; other agents are willing to step in and assist to ensure both the client and the Realtor are successful in accomplishing their goal.
Lastly, we believe in educating our clients about the inner workings of their real estate transactions. At the conclusion of a transaction, we want our clients to be able to educate others about what to expect when buying or selling a home and pitfalls to avoid during a real estate transaction in an effort to encourage more homeownership and future listings.
We are most proud of our growth as a brokerage and the continual trust our clients have in us to represent them well in their real estate transactions. The brokerage started from an idea and now can boast of a team of nine Realtors and a growing database of clients and referrals in just over two years.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is a great place for real estate professionals. The population is continuing to grow and housing needs will always need to be met. Whether you make it a full-time job or you do it in conjunction with another career, a career in real estate can open a lot of doors, literally and figuratively.
