Meet Rashad T. Dudley of Kid City in Westside ATL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rashad T. Dudley.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
First, I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for God’s Grace! My story begins around middle school when I lost both my father and brother to gun violence. I lost both of my role models during one of the most significant stages of my life. I pretty much just skated through high school and waited until the last minute to apply to Morehouse. Thankfully, I got accepted and set out in search of brotherhood and quality education.

Looking back to my freshman year, I came into Morehouse as a business major in hope of landing a job with a Fortune 500 company upon graduating. It wasn’t until my junior year in 2016 that that dream had disappeared. I worked at an elementary school on the south side and met some of the most brilliant minded youth that weren’t afforded the luxury of resources as other youth in wealthier neighborhoods. Working with these kids pushed me into my PURPOSE. I changed my major and set out to find ways to spark change in underserved youth.

Since then, I dedicated my time to impacting the youth. I’ve noticed that not only have I went through some of the same experiences as the youth I’ve worked with but also that representation in the classroom matters. Up until I got to Morehouse, I only had 1 black male teacher. Black male teachers are significant in the upbringing of black boys. I have been able to see some of my mentees and past students graduate high school, go off to college, start middle school, win youth football championships, and so much more. Being able to share those moments with them has continued to push me forward!

Three years later and being able to empower and mentor youth has become my passion. I am currently a program coordinator and lead teacher for an after school program working with homeless and underserved youth on the Westside of Atlanta.

Has it been a smooth road?
We all face challenges that push us closer to our PURPOSE. One of the biggest challenges I’ve dealt with is trying to create a safe space for my students not only in school but outside in their communities as well. Many of my students leave our program and have to deal with violence, poverty, abuse and so much more in their communities. Seeing this has led me closer to my PURPOSE of wanting to leave the impact of the youth and their neighborhoods as well.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kid City – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am currently a program coordinator and lead after school teacher for an after school program that serves K-8th graders in the Westside community of Atlanta.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Thankfully, coming to Atlanta has afforded many opportunities to grow with my field.
