Meet Rebecca Muhihu of Steel Peaches Photography in Gwinnett – Birmingham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Muhihu.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Art and creativity have always been a part of my life starting from a young age I witnessed my mother painting incredible images of everyday life and important religious figures. In my childhood home in Nairobi Kenya we had a giant wall and on it and my mom created a chalkboard paint canvas for us as well as a massive painting of Jesus and his disciples and I remember looking at that painting as a child in being so enamored with it and being able to express my own art so freely created a foundation for what I do in photography now. When I turned 16, I was working at a summer camp and I worked with a couple of girls who did photography and one was selling her camera since I’d only dabbled with horrible phone cameras (circa 2006).

I saved $300 and bought my first DSLR a Canon T6i that I still have and hold dearly. It quickly became the way that I documented everything around me and created these photo stories of what I have experienced. The older I got the more I realized that it was also the way I gave myself footing, purpose, and confidence in the rooms I was in and wanted to be in. After ten years of casual hobby and small gig photography, my business partner and I started Steel Peaches Photography to give our clients and potential clients a space to view and enjoy the work we created together.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think it is because life hasn’t been a smooth road. I think when you’re creative there is no smooth road because you create from experiences and if all of them were happy….maybe we would be more content with life and wouldn’t need to create anything. I remember before I picked up a camera feeling voiceless and unheard but also super unsure of what I really wanted to say and the camera gave me a voice without needing the exact words. My business partner really had to push and convince me to actually create Steel Peaches Photography because monetizing this thing that I had used as an outlet and a release and a joy seemed unfair and cruel to myself.

Steel Peaches Photography LLC – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When I sit back and think of the years spent honing this craft and getting to know people on an intimate level, photography has created a wonderful environment that fostered a life long community of friends. Helping and teaching my daughter how to use my camera and her own eventually.
