Today we’d like to introduce you to Requan C. Lott.
Requan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to Atlanta in 2016, transferred into Clark Atlanta University, where I decided to major in Business Marketing. Atlanta and Clark Atlanta seemed like a big playground where I could explore and try out different things in the entertainment industry. It was fitting for me, I played in extra roles on sets like OWN’s Greenleaf, BOO! A Madea’s Halloween, and All Eyez on Me. I quickly learned that I didn’t want to pursue acting and was way more interested in the business of entertainment. My University was exceptional at having so many events on campus that pulled in people from the entertainment industry and placed them right in our faces on campus. I was able to ask questions, apply for internships, and learn from info sessions. I first interned with Loud N Klear ran by Anthony Kalel, manager of R&B artist Felixx. Here I was getting my feet wet, I learned a lot about event curation, putting together marketing plans, and it was my first introduction to what artist management looked like.
I later started interning with MCMediaWorks, a Marketing, PR, and Management agency ran by CEO Johnathan Sims and Co-Founder Jontaeu Johns, the internship quickly turned into me becoming Johnathans Assistant and MCMedia Works Executive Assistant. Johnathan manages R&B artist Jacquees, Canjelae, and runs MCMedia works Sports. At MCMediaWorks, I learned more event curation, but I mainly learned artist management. While pursuing my degree in Business Marketing, becoming President of The CAU Marketing Club on campus and working as an assistant manager, it clicked. These two things go together. Marketing is extremely important in managing talent. When you have the information of the numbers, the outlets, contacts, have the knowledge to know what to do with all of it, and how you’re going to strategically use all of this data to move your artists/talents career forward; you alleviate a lot of the middle man, you can leverage meetings to the full advantage of your client and can just about operate as a label. Marketing is one of the powerhouses in the music industry. During my time studying at Clark Atlanta University, I toured with Jacquess as an assistant tour manager all across the country. I’ve worked with BET, RollingOut Magazine, Live Nation, Revolt, and BMI. This journey has been more than I could have every dreamed of for myself. It took a lot of networking and being at the right place at the right time, and asking the right questions just to get my foot in the door with the entertainment industry. However I have by no means reached the plateau of my journey here, I’m still “rookie” status, but I will continue to climb this ladder to Executive. My experiences has led me to start my own Marketing, Management, & Consulting company, The Lott Agency.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, not at all. You should know that when you are out to accomplish multiple goals you’re entering a war zone, there will be plenty of obstacles but I didn’t let it deter me from Gods Plan. I’m in the military as well. I just commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army, so a lot of the time, my obstacles came from trying to juggle a lot, sometimes too much. At first, these worlds (the military and the entertainment industry) seemed like two different things and that I needed to just focus on one and leave the other alone, but they are not different when it comes to leadership and work ethic. While in college I struggled with trying to make both ROTC and building my resume in the entertainment business work together as they were both very time consuming along side taking 18 hours every semester at Clark. It was a struggle, but it worked out. Communication and dedication were the main things here, I had to communicate with my commander, my professors, and my boss to let them know what was going on, where I was at, and the things I was involved in. There were times I would change three outfits a day and would be running all over the city from 5am til 12am. From PT in the morning, to class, to ROTC, to organization meetings, internship meetings, clock in at work, go home and study and repeat. It was important that I communicated what was going because it could have easily been portrayed that sometimes if I had low energy or me needing a day off was “laziness”, which could have put me out of some of my positions. I stayed dedicated because I knew where I was headed and my faith in myself and God grew intensely through this journey.
