Today we’d like to introduce you to Rich Lowe.
Rich, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in the East New York section of Brooklyn, NY. Both my parents were incarcerated by the time I was 2 years old. My grandmother Carrie Lee Davis (who raised me) would play 50’s and 60’s R&B music all throughout my childhood which eventually got me interested in singing. I began singing in high school. I attended Brooklyn High School of the Arts for vocal music under the tutelage of Mrs. Charlene Corbett-Thomas. After graduating, I continued to pursue music; even getting accepted in Berklee College of Music (but after being awarded a partial scholarship, I still could not afford to attend). I landed a few indie deals as an R&B artist. My first situation was with Def Squad under late 80’s-1990’s rapper Erick Sermon of EPMD. No music was released. From there, I continued to perform in NYC building a small name for myself. I released “Get Enough” an R&B ballad as my first official released single in 2015. The song reached the top of the independent internet digital radio charts (DRT) and ended up playing on FM stations in 5 states. I traveled regionally for a year and a half performing the song. I released an album Exclusively in Japan titled “Love Traveler” in 2017. I also won the Urban Ignite National Artist competition in 2017. I’ve won 3 indie awards for the writing and vocal performance on “Get Enough”. I landed 7 more indie record deal offers throughout the years but nothing was the right fit. I began acting in 2012. I co-wrote and starred in a musical based web series called “The Rhythm Diaries” which sparked my love of acting. From there, I went on to write or co-write 3 feature films (2 of them musicals). I have starred in 5 short films, been featured in 2 feature films and am a lead actor in 2 shows being pitched to networks. I am currently filming “The Oratory”; a modern-day story of a Black American priest inspired by the life of Don Bosco. I made my professional theater debut when I starred in the stage play “The Royale” by Marco Ramirez produced by American Stage Theater in 2017. Our version of the play won 12 awards. I have directed 2 of my own films. My short Film “The Least of All” (which I wrote, directed, edited, produced, scored and starred in) won 2 awards in the festival circuit in 2017. My documentary directorial debut for the film “Section 3: Finding My Vision” was nominated for two awards in the festival circuit 2019. I am the father of a handsome 10-year-old boy named Naszir. I am currently filming, auditioning and recording an R&B album titled “The 4th Law of Motion.”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were many struggles. Ending up homeless twice while pursuing your dreams and being a father is never a good thing. Having to start over twice in two different states was extremely difficult. The biggest struggles were all mental. The day to day battle of trying to accomplish your dreams with 9 to 5’s staring you in the face telling you to quit is never easy but if you truly truly believe something can be achieved… it can and will but the road will NOT be easy.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am an actor, singer, songwriter, music and film producer, screenwriter and dancer. I’m sure it sounds like overkill but people that know me know that I actually really do all these things. I believe what sets me apart is my work ethic; because I was not natural at ANYTHING. Every single thing I’ve been able to do was done through years and years of training and experience.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Consistency. There is nothing more important to finding success than consistency.
