Meet Ricky Artis of Arctic H.R.S. in Decatur

 

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricky Artis.

Ricky, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After graduating from college with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, I experienced a delay in securing a position within the accounting industry. Utilizing all networking endeavors, through shadowing and internship experiences while attending college, I was not successful in obtaining a corporate level accounting position. Once months began to pass, I decided to take another course of action. I reflected and encountered on the skills I learned growing up, involving repairing household appliances and refrigeration systems. I was quite familiar with the service industry due to my father having an HVAC business and background. As an adolescent, he would train and teach me about a variety of subjects, regarding thermodynamics and relatable physics principles. The knowledgeable information gained from completing mechanical repair jobs with my father when I was younger became extremely useful. I began to apply for appliance technician positions. Within a month, I gained full-time employment with a major service company. They sent me to Chicago to train on some of the latest equipment at that time. I discovered that majority of the information that was provided at the training was second nature. Once the position started fully, consistently I was capable of reading wire schematics and accurately diagnosing repairs before reaching a worksite. I enjoyed meeting customers and gaining insight from their life’s journey they would highlight as I made repairs to their appliances. Many of the customers would state “why don’t you start your own repair business”, due to the attention of detail and quality service I provided.

A couple years later and I noticed the same drive I put forth in working for a major company is the exact impact I could utilize as a small business owner. The passion to offer a quality evoked service, with extensive knowledge and experience grew into a goal of mine. This is a vision I selected to provide every customer. Honing in on the trade even more, I underwent training for vast amount of brands and equipment. This equipment ranged from convection ovens to commercial-sized ice machines. After conversing with mentors and performing a great deal of planning, I dedicated to the idea of starting a business. As the business continues to grow, I strive to become parallel with its growth. Recently, I obtained an M.B.A. to sustain the present demand of continually implementing project management ingenuity. Business provides a list of constraints, from obtaining contracts, and other initiatives such as, but not limited to, ensuring vendor accounts receivables are credited every net 30 if not earlier. Although, in order to successfully manage contractors, handle unforeseen business ordeals, and ensure customers are satisfied with repairs, the only option is gaining invaluable operating procedures. In return, encouraging a promising growth forward for Arctic H.R.S.

Has it been a smooth road?
Attempting to operate a growing small business entails a significantly demanding learning curve. In that sense, everyday is a constant stride for market share, and that requires strategic planning, and implementaiton. Regardless of one step forward, stubble, two steps back, a half-step forward. Progress and efficiency is always the best stride, as I have discovered while attempting any business in every aspect of operations. Selecting ways to improve project management is always a constant objective as well. At first, this was unknown and the end result consisted of high operating cost, associated from trial and error in order to attain a solution. The strategic planning of advancement by improving operations promotes a transparency in business. I’m able to notify job completion rates accurately based on scheduled repairs, and  provide tips and specifications on serviced equipment for our network. Also, as a result receiving detailed work orders for contractors, promoting a confident environment for optimizing their skills when making repairs. Project management is key in the appliance repair industry and every service industry. The challenges are within identifying critical key components in operations, that can make the due diligence in completing a service agreement more efficient. I find this as being the best way in establishing stability against industry competition as well.

As a household appliance repair business there are a few dynamics of awareness I must constantly remain knowledgeable towards. Arctic H.R.S. offers repairs to multiple household appliances and equipment. We specialize and operate on all standard and luxury appliance brands. In order to complete this task, Arctic H.R.S. must constantly remain informed regarding the latest technical manuals and specifications about servicing equipment. Establishing the ability to become well informed on the latest reference and materials increases the outcome of completing a quality repair, ultimately with aspiration of improving customer awareness.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
When you are stuck in this Atlanta traffic, and can not wait to get home to the cozy cool temperature set on the thermostat. In attempts to escape the humidity of an immense amount heat. Only to find the air conditioning unit humming in the back yard, inoperable. This experience occurs quite often while servicing customers during the summer’s in Georgia. Also, other equipment repairs tend to increase seasonally as well. So, I believe there is a good market for the equipment servicing industry, whether it’s vending machines, or arcade game machines. Providing a certain tact when caring for a customer’s appliance concerns is quintessential in completing repairs. No one knows the importance of a washer until it is full of water with a seized motor assembly. The quality of repair aspect in the household appliance repair industry is quite critical. Especially when many customers have newborns, or college students home for spring break. Offering efficiency, quickness, and placing attention to detail on servicing our escalated calls, and especially all repairs is part of Arctic H.R.S.’s mission.
