Today we’d like to introduce you to Ro Lamb.
Ro, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Sometimes people ask me when I started writing and I’ll say I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. Words have always been a passion of mine. My mother says I could read when I was three and as a child, I would read dictionaries and encyclopedias for fun.
But also, I think I have had multiple starts. When I was 17 I was introduced to poetry and from there I started writing songs and started to record music. All the while, I was writing short stories and starting novels and throwing them away and starting new ones.
It wasn’t until 2019 when I began to focus on writing fiction as a way to make a living. I finished my first comic book and crowdfunded two issues of that series (the third issue is on its way LOL). And then, I completed a novel I’ve been working on for years that’s being edited as I type. And now I am just trying to keep the ball rolling.
I always feel like a beginner because there is always so much to learn. Every time I have come across a new medium of writing, I have always found a way to involve myself. I gravitate to words and stories.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, for the most part it has been smooth. I have found some success very early on and I am super grateful for that.
The hardest part of this road has been the mental and emotional challenges that come with it. There is a lot of rejection and so I spend a lot of time questioning my ability; wondering if I am where I’m supposed to be. Also, there are a lot of struggles that happen in trying to collaborate and work with other writers and creators to create projects. I have had to walk away from situations where I felt I was being taken advantage of and situations where we just didn’t get along; it isn’t always pretty.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I write fiction for various mediums. My independent ongoing comic book series is called Scarlet Ranger. It’s about a young man who inherits the title Scarlet Ranger from his grandfather. The series opens when his grandfather’s nemesis breaks out of prison. So we follow this young man as he is learning to protect his family, his city, and ultimately the legacy his grandfather left for him. We crowdfunded issues 1 and 2 on Kickstarter and issue 3 is on the way.
I have other stories in the works: An epic fantasy novel that is with an editor now and some more comic book projects I am excited about!
A lot of my stories talk about fatherhood, tradition and feature intergenerational relationships. Watching people learn who they are while in the shadows of the people who came before.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
That’s a great question.
It’s probably when I made my first basket on a 10-foot basketball goal. I was with my Dad at a High School. He was having a meeting with a coach in the basketball gym and I was over on the other end of the court just throwing the ball at the hoop. It felt like forever and then I just remember it going in. I screamed for my Dad that I had made it. I don’t remember what he said or his reaction. I only remember how proud I felt.
