Meet Robert Bexley of Bexley Law Firm in Gwinnett County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Bexley.

Robert, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a native Georgian, I was born in Atlanta, and raised mainly in the DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett County areas. I started high school at Clarkston High School and graduated from South Gwinnett High School in 1996. After a couple of years at the University of Georgia, I transferred to Georgia State University to earn my Bachelors of Business Administration.

I spent several years working for various large corporations before recalling my lifelong desire to practice law. I was accepted to Georgia State University College of Law where I was extremely active in the student community. During those three short years, I was an officer in the Estate Planning and Wealth Management Law Society, co-founder and officer of the Business and Employment Law Society, and co-founder of the Be Your Own Boss Network. In addition, as the Editor-in-Chief of “The Docket,” the GSU College of Law student newspaper, I tripled the budget for the newspaper, utilized technological innovation to upgrade the newspaper website, and advanced journalistic ethics with strong editorial and news integrity and professionalism.

After graduating, I was hired as a law clerk by the United States Department of Labor, and then as an associate attorney upon passing the Bar. While with the U.S. Department of Labor, I was assigned to a special task force charged with protecting the rights of mine workers in the Southeastern United States. My duties included negotiating settlements for and prosecuting citations for severe violations of the Mine Safety and Health Act.

In 2013, I was presented with the opportunity to fulfill my dream of opening my own law firm in Lawrenceville, at the heart of Gwinnett County. From its inception, my firm’s singular focus has been assisting entrepreneurs, emerging businesses, and nonprofit organizations with various legal needs. As an entrepreneur myself, I understand how difficult it is for small businesses and nonprofit organizations to receive competent, affordable legal services. The purpose of the Bexley Law Firm is to ensure that no Georgia small business owner, entrepreneur, or nonprofit organization goes without legal guidance or representation. For 5 years we have accomplished this mission and have served hundreds of businesses and nonprofits with their formation, contract, trademark, and litigation needs.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road is completely smooth and we all have burdens that must be overcome. Growing up in a working-class family, I have a firsthand understanding of poverty, subsisting on the free and reduced lunch program throughout elementary and most of high school. I have worked or been in school since I was 14. This work ethic has taught me the value of working hard for what you have and want in this life.

Additionally, for most of my life I have struggled with obesity and the medical issues that come with that disease. Not content to suffer under this burden any longer, in 2016 I underwent bariatric surgery and over the last 2 years I have shed more than 170 pounds, giving me a new lease on life and providing me a wonderful new perspective on what it means to fight for what you want and to achieve success through hard work and determination.

Using these life experiences, I am able to personally relate to my clients and their individual struggles and issues. I understand how hard it is for a small business to start from scratch and wrangle with the constant burden of budgeting the fixed and variable startup costs and going expenses of running a successful business.

Main Street has always been the fuel that drives this nation. If small businesses are the body of America, then nonprofit organizations are the soul. One of the core characteristics of American culture is our deeply generous nature, which is perfectly demonstrated by the millions of flourishing nonprofit organizations. However, similar to for-profit small businesses, nonprofit organizations must manage many unique and complex state and federal regulations. As nonprofit legal professionals, the Bexley Law Firm understands the fundamental and essentials needs of nonprofit organizations.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Lawyers must have a variety of core competencies to be successful, such as strong listening, speaking, and writing abilities. However, I think my greatest skill is my ability to understand and foster the passion that my clients have for creating businesses and nonprofits. Unlike the most other attorneys, my career and educational background is in business and being an entrepreneur. It is essential that an attorney is able to relate to his or her client and understand their motivations, struggles, and needs. I am able to do that. I have walked many miles in my clients’ shoes. I understand the excitement in planning, the caution in creation, the pride in the execution, and the worry of sustaining the business. I understand this because I have been there myself.
