Meet Robert and Samantha Davis-Woods of Kingdom Hustle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert and Samantha Davis-Woods.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It started in December 2016 as part of an illustration I was using during a small group discussion about the behavior shown by the three wise men to evade King Herod, thus saving their lives. I used an example of Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir when Gucci went away to prison but left Keyshia with funds to manage while he was away. In that context, she had two opportunities.

Sit on the money and maintain a lifestyle or invest and use it to start a collection of businesses. What started out as $2M, turned into $6M when Gucci came home. Using this example, I then challenged the mentality in and the room and said the following, “Who said you couldn’t be in the Kingdom and Hustle.” That night would begin the journey of something that God would send to help fortify my marriage, build greater stability with my children and provide a vehicle to the world that invites them to invite make God proud in whatever it is they do.

Today, we are in our full 2nd year and are excited about the opportunity, platform and vision God has given to us to run with. It’s a tall task to balance the responsibility as parents, with careers, children, working in ministry and all while managing a business. We deeply believe that God has uniquely prepared us to build something that is beautifully unique, crafted for the times with the ability to live beyond us.

Our vision is to become a disruptive force through apparel, content creation/production and business. When God provides a vision, the one who receives it has a responsibility to write it down, chase after it relentlessly and communicate it early and often for someone else to run with it when that time comes.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not exactly. When we first started out trying to think through and discovery what Kingdom Hustle was actually supposed to be. It became one of the most difficult and trying time for Samantha and Robert. It felt like the harder we tried, the more we fell behind in multiple categories across our lives. At times, it would’ve been easier to give up and walk away. Because nobody really knew what it was, we didn’t have a social media presence, website – not even a product. All we had was a name. And that name, the thought, the idea is what kept us going.

I can remember Father’s Day 2017. I felt like Samantha started to see my fire dying down about Kingdom Hustle. Life was getting the best of me and I just stopped giving it the attention it needed. I was becoming consumed by the ups and downs of life and started to lose focus on what I was supposed to be working on. They printed up some sample t-shirts and got a hat embroidered with the logo that was initially created. We don’t use it now, but that gift did something for all of us. It reignited a fire of purpose. Regardless of what transpired up until that point, it said that we’re going to move forward and give this our best and see what happens.

We’ve been bootstrapping all of the financial burdens on our own and have even set-up our own fulfillment center to make each item ourselves. There have been times where it’s been unbearable because learning to work with your spouse is like learning to ride a bike for a second time. We’ve had plenty of challenges along the way, but we both realize that what we’ve been given is bigger than us both and it requires our cooperation and agreement to move forward.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kingdom Hustle story. Tell us more about the business.
We believe the Kingdom Hustle exists solely for the purpose to make God proud. Right now, we do this through creative Christian apparel as a reminder of why we exist. We provide t-shirts, hoodies, hats that serve as promotional awareness, encouragement and a reminder for those who see and wear it. It’s bigger than just clothing. We want to inspire a group of people that authentically want live with and for God without fear, but in faith.

We’re most proud that all of this started as a passing thought to help make a point, but has turned into a whole movement. What sets us apart from other apparel companies is our objective is not to only persuade you to buy something. Our hope is that when you see our logo, clothing or hear about us. It sparks you to ponder and ask some critical questions. Will God be cool with the contributions and efforts I made with the life given to me. Am I living intentionally and exhausting every opportunity I’ve been given? We desire to create a culture around that inspires, challenges and pushes everyone to strive to live life today is all you have because tomorrow isn’t promised.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the custom apparel/clothing line industry still in a stage of growth. The presence of the internet and the ability to connect with anyone in the world is not to be underestimated. Whoever can effectively manage the tell their story the best in the tech space – will maintain the advantage. I believe people really want to see results and that really boils down to being able to see value in everything they engaged and committed too. From their jobs, relationships, decisions. People really want to know their actions are supportive of a cause and they’re contributions have helped to further such cause(s).
