Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocket.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Rocket. I’m an artist/producer and have been creating music since the age of 12. I’m currently 28 and recently released my first project “Rocket Trip” on most streaming platforms… that’s your que to check me out lol! I began my music career in middle school (about 2006-07) as a producer; when I wasn’t crashing the family computer from downloading the latest Soulja Boy CD, I was creating beats! My stepfather, also a music enthusiast and producer, introduced me to my first beat machine. I created beats for a while, then eventually was inspired to rap specifically after hearing my uncle freestyle the last verse to one of his tracks “Dat N**a” which was recorded in my mom’s bedroom. Hearing such lyrical ability and talented song creation, I wanted to rap too! So, I got with some friends in the neighborhood, pitched the idea, and soon after we were freestyling in one friend’s garage, using the other friend’s speakers to play some instrumentals, I had burned on a CD earlier that day. Eventually, I recorded my first track, “Fire Man” which was released on myspace–yes, I’ve been doing this for a while. My family line is rich with talented artistry and creatives but hasn’t quite had anyone to go the distance…. not yet at least. That’s where I come in! Music feels more like a family legacy that I’ve embraced, but through time and realization, I’ve undoubtedly made it my own! It has certainly been a journey, but it is a path not only attuned to my liking but also my calling.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’re in metro Atlanta, of course the road hasn’t been smooth lol. These roadblocks are crazy, some of which include: Awful businesspeople, overwhelmingly conflicting work schedules, being taken seriously, sacrificing rest, copyrights issues, being broke (gotta pay to play in the big leagues), missed opportunities, etc. Humbly speaking, I don’t think anything has befallen me or the team that any other artist/creative hasn’t experienced on their own. This isn’t even to include all the things that become us in our personal lives (heartbreak, family drama, soul searching, losing the way, losing hope, walking away from passions, losing God). These chapters in our lives always seem to fuel the art. The most paining of all struggles has to be patience. God has a strange yet dynamic way of making you wait your turn. It always feels like punishment in the beginning, but count it all as blessed because the power of divine timing is unmatched. The road is still filled with obstacles and challenges to overcome, but those obstacles only let the team and I know that we’re moving in the right direction.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am… an Emcee, a storyteller, a lyrical picture painter. I am an artist in its complete form. I think the game has gotten away from making music that FEELS good AS WELL as sounding good. I’m totally for the evolution because I’m a fan of the art in all its forms, but sometimes it’s good to stick to the roots and grow from there. I guess that makes me the rose that grew through the pavement.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
It’s the black mecha! I’m from the small city of Statesboro, GA, and what most of us considered “the city” is Savannah. They refer to Atlanta as “Little LA” due to the sharp rise in production studios and films being created right here. Stars are here. Opportunity is here. Our people are here. Atlanta is also the hip-hop capitol. No matter what part of Georgia you’re from, Atlanta gives you something to be proud of…. unless it’s the Falcons–Lord help us LOLLL!
What I don’t like about Atlanta?? There’s no water, lol. I Love a good beach trip and we are a ways off from any shoreline. The lakes are cool but I need that beach baby. Gotta punch a shark one-time lmao
