Meet Rodeline Joseph of Medsembly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodeline Joseph.

Rodeline, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been in healthcare for almost half my life, starting at the age of 17 as a Licensed Practical Nurse in high school and became a Physician Assistant over six years ago. I was met with many hurdles as I journeyed through healthcare, specifically as a first-generation college student and person of color. It nearly led me to give up on my dreams. I learned from these tribulations and vowed to keep the door open and make it easier for the next student or professional through mentorship. After helping over 100 students and realizing the impact of my work, I set out to create a platform where 100 can turn into 10,000 and 10,000,000. I knew the best and most efficient way to do this was by leveraging technology. So I set out to create a platform where college students on a healthcare track can connect with professionals in their field to seek mentorship and career prep to improve outcomes as they transitioned into their careers. I let the students guide me to build a great platform and in the past six months, we have garnered over 1500 users within the Physician Assistant community with plans to expand to other careers like nursing, dentistry, and physical therapy.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not! Every day is a struggle as you build a company…but you learn to ride the wave. Some of the biggest challenges has been with development. I do not have a technical co-founder. I have had to outsource an offshore development team, which can be expensive especially as you iterate. You have to be mindful of the communication issues that may result as a non-technical founder and your tech team reiterate everything, keep an open line of communication, and meet regularly. Other challenges of course, relate to capital and not running out of money and access to resources and the right people to help turn your product into a full company.

As you know, we’re big fans of Medsembly. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Medsembly is an Edtech and Healthtech startup. Medsembly is an interactive, mentorship-driven career resource tool connecting students that want to get into healthcare to professionals in their field. We are changing the way career services and advising are provided within the higher education system. One of the biggest shortcomings with advising and career services is the lack of connection to the careers. Advice and career counselors do a good job, nonetheless, but we take it to the next level by creating a platform for these students to connect with and build relationships with people that have the insight and are actually in the careers they want to pursue. This will not only provide clarity but reassurance as a student that you are on the right track. Our focus and what makes us stand out are the longevity and relationship building. Medsembly does not end when you graduate, we create a culture on relationship and community building where students have on-demand access to people that will be there for them and with them through the entirety of their career journey.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think the most important quality I hold that has played a pivotal role in my success thus far is perseverance. You have to persevere no matter what. If you want to be successful and decide to go down the long and arduous road of building a company-or truthfully anything-you have to be ready to persevere.
