Meet Rodney Ruffin of Spectrum Property Inspections

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodney Ruffin.

Rodney, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my company with my wife Veronica, back in 2018. I was working in the trades performing residential HVAC and Plumbing. I use to have to work on-call a lot for emergencies. It took up so much of my time to the point I only seen my family in the mornings when I left for work and late-night when I finished running calls. I’ve always possessed an entrepreneurial spirit and knew it was time for me to create my own destiny, God Willing. I remember how the idea came along so vividly. One evening after running an Air Conditioning call, I remember calling my mentor. We spoke regularly. He’s literally a Jack of all trades. He builds homes from the ground up. He goes, I’m going to start inspecting homes in my spare time. Jack built so many relationships with realtors and they fully trusted his judgment.

After our conversation, I went home and immediately started doing my own research. After about two weeks of contemplation, I signed up with the American Home Inspectors Training program and became a certified home inspector. Since 2017 I have obtained 30+ certifications and licenses. In the state of Georgia, the home inspection industry is not regulated but I went above and beyond and passed the National Home Inspectors Examination that’s currently required in 34 states. I’ve invested many days and nights of studying to become the best at what I do. I enjoy the ability of creating my own schedule and the opportunity to mentor and share with fellow inspectors. We truly value the relationships we developed with realtors, new home buyers and investors. Our goal is to make every real estate transaction as smooth as possible.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road was very rough. We literally built our business from the mud. We have thousands of dollars in equipment and it was all paid for by our paychecks from our full-time jobs with no guarantee when business will ramp up to pay for it all. I even took a job as an inspector to learn the ins and outs of the business and made very little pay that barely paid our bills. It was a risk I had to take. We trusted the process. We had to build a brand that can be trusted. There are several inspectors out here but we had to separate ourselves from the rest and focus on the prize.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Spectrum Property Inspections – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We perform home inspections which is a limited, non-invasive examination of the condition of the home, often in connection with the sale of that home. We also offer ancillary services, Radon Testing, Infrared Thermographic imaging, Sewer Scope Inspections and Indoor Air Quality Testing for mold, formaldehyde’s, lead and allergies. We Specialize and are mostly known for our Indoor air quality testing. We are very proud of all the benefits our clients get when choosing us for an inspection, we have our own home maintenance manual that’s included with each and every inspection, we’ve partnered with ADT to save several hundred dollars, we offer a structural, roofing, mold and sewer line warranty with each and every inspection. What sets us apart from other inspectors is if our client is unhappy with our services, we will give them a full refund and pay for another inspector of their choice.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Atlanta, a very diverse and beautiful city. We’ve been blessed beyond measure with endless opportunities and built so many relationships with so many warm and beautiful people. I honestly can’t say anything negative about ATL. We are originally from Richmond, Virginia and the similarities are unreal. We don’t plan on ever leaving.
