RSZ Design + Development is a woman-owned, Latina-owned firm, and at the helm of our firm, you will find our creative, multi-lingual, and grit-driven Founder and CEO, Rosa Santiago Zimmerman. Born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Rosa has been the embodiment of someone who transcends all barriers and breaks all the rules; before, it was popular and “trending” to be unique and stand out from the crowd. Interior design is her second calling in a male-centric industry; having studied emergency medical services first to become a paramedic. Rosa is the oldest of two siblings, raised by a single mom who is a force to be reckoned with. Rosa attributes her impetuous character, her leadership skills, her no hold-bars attitude to her mom, and watching her succeed against all odds.
Rosa is the proud mama bear to Peter (31) & Victoria (24) and recently became the Memma (grandma) to Emma James (15 mo). Her children are her biggest accomplishment. Nothing matters to her in this life without them. Rosa and Steven have been married for 26 years. They are complete opposites yet work hard daily to use those opposite traits to their advantage.
Rosa prides herself in being different, standing out, having an opinion. She also focuses greatly on establishing professional boundaries to live a balanced life. Besides her immediate family, the things that matter to her most are living with purpose, positivity, laughter, and living in a state of constant gratitude. She has the words GRIT, GRATITUDE, and INTENTION tattooed on her right wrist on purpose because she is right-handed and wants to see and live by these sentiments every day.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a woman in a male-centric industry, you would think would have “challenges, but that was not the case for me. I fit in with the boys, I treat them with the respect and courtesy that I expect to be treated, and the relationships that I have forged have been life-changing. I also do not believe in challenges; I believe in experiences. I see the word challenges as a word that signifies something that cannot be overcome, and there is nothing I cannot overcome except a deadly, incurable illness, unexpected accident or death itself. And even then, expect to feel my energy around anyway. 🙂
Experiences are open doors. Sometimes there are doors that are not for us, and it is our responsibility and care to ourselves to identify those moments and move on to the next door.
No, it has not been a smooth road. When is accomplishment ever a smooth road? However, the journey is what has allowed my success, so without the bumps and experiences along the way, I would have been bored, or given up, or even worst; taken it for granted! Of course, there have been struggles with contractors, clients, suppliers, pandemics, and family, but the real truth is that if I had to do it all over it again, I do not think I could do without the experiences, lessons, guidance that I have received during the journey. The journey is what I have savored the most.
