Today we’d like to introduce you to Royce Monroe.
Royce, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to ATL in 2004 after graduating from Full Sail University. I worked at Guitar Center and interned at v103. After the radio personality I was interning for was let go, I focused more on music. Engineering for Verse Simmonds over the years introduced me to pretty much everyone in the industry. From there, I came to work for ASCAP here in Atlanta. At the same time, I was engineering for Atlantic Records’ artists and soon thereafter, Dj Drama came along and offered me an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been easy. Separating monetary gain and perfecting my craft was a struggle in the beginning. I tell my interns now, you have to work twice as hard to get half of what you deserve. Doing what you need to do allows you to do what you want to do. It takes more than just the will of wanting to be in the music industry, you got to earn it. Transitioning from a 9-5 into the music business and having it support the lifestyle you’ve become accustomed to is a challenge.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an A&R. I focus on scouting talent, developing acts, polishing music creations, presenting marketing strategies and ensuring the completion of the administrative details of music. With a background in performing rights royalties as well as tracking and mixing as an engineer, I find these two skill sets allow me to deal with and truly engage with both creative and administrative individuals.
As a company, I most proud of the history our founders pioneered for the urban market. Dj Drama and Don Cannon are real examples of entrepreneurs who impacted urban music culture while making history for where the musical distribution market was headed. Our embodiment of the Generation Now allows us to focus on whats truly fresh and groundbreaking for the culture. Having this mindset as an organization is what sets us apart from the competition.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am a results-driven individual. Its another way of saying, I’m goal-oriented. Being able to reverse engineer a situation in order to identify the steps needed to accomplish said goal, is characteristic that has attributed to my success thus far. Work hard, get the results, then do more.
