Meet DeAnne Major of The Ruins at Kellum Valley Farm

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeAnne Major.

DeAnne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Beginning in the 80’s (oh, wow that sounds so long ago!), I worked for some very cool women philanthropists in Atlanta. Fundraisers, political events, and many many legendary parties were what we did, so hosting weddings was an extension of that. I was fortunate in those times, to have such great women mentors, who oozed southern hospitality.

I have always loved history and visiting the places I read about in books, so when “the ruins” property came available, it was a no-brainer for us. The niece of Andrew Carnegie originally owned the property, and built a school and dormitory for her girls, bringing under-privileged from all over to attend. The stone ruins and views are what drew us to it, and ultimately became the wedding venue, The Ruins at Kellum Valley Farm.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Are you kidding? I’m a risk taker, so of course, there have been bumps. In the end, I can say the good outweighed the bad though. The struggle for me has always been getting that balance of work vs. play.

Also, we were one of the first inclusive venues in the area that did a little more than just renting a space. Weddings have evolved into a premier event, and in the beginning, it took a lot of seeking to find those vendors that saw our vision.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Ruins at Kellum Valley Farm – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
So, the Ruins at Kellum Valley Farm is a wedding venue. Weddings are our thing, and really what we do best. From the beginning, the place has been known for unique, “out of the box” weddings (think boho chic). That’s cuz, “the ruins” and the views don’t go out of style, they are a classic.

I am most proud of our staff, some who have been with us since day one (10 years now!). We are like family, and I have watched some that started helping when they were in high school, turn into super ladies and gents. And with that goes, how well we all work together, which in turn helps make the wedding process as stress-free as possible for our couples.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Always checking out new trends. Bars and Cocktail hours are huge now, and we love experimenting with signature drinks and punches to pair with appetizers. Raw Oyster Stations are also big this coming year. Let’s face it, everyone loves a good party!
