Today we’d like to introduce you to Dj Dolomite.
Dj Dolomite, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, I was always around music coming up as a kid to teenager, to my age now. My dad’s friend was/is a Dj (Shoutout Dj Trans of Emporia, VA) and my father used to be the guy to make CDs for coworkers at his job. I used to travel with my Dad to his house a lot when I was younger so there were a lot of nights where I would just be around my dad and uncle watching them make different Cd’s and even my uncle making mixes on tapes. So the sound of good Dj’ing was always there. I would say that kind of laid the foundation of my expectations of good dj’ing sounded like and I didn’t really know it. Fast forward, into my middle school/high school years, although I was very active in school athletics such as basketball & football, one of my best friends and I used to make mix cd’s for our classmates for fun. Even throughout high school, we would always be in charge of the basketball team warm-up mix cd haha (Shoutout SoLo).
However, throughout those years, my main focus was pretty much on sports, especially basketball. Fast forward to college years, I officially decided to actually pursue a career as a Dj in the year of about mid-2013 (Sophomore year) around Thanksgiving break time. During that time, my aspirations of pursuing the game of collegiate basketball were cut short and it mentally took a toll on me. I always enjoyed music, outside of sports, it took my mind off of reality. I remember having the initial conversation with my Dad and Uncle about me wanting to pursue Dj’ing and how supportive they were. The helped me invest in my first controller. From there, I started dj’ing on my college campus for free just to build some type of name for myself. My college was a division 3 school so it was pretty small. If you were someone who had something positive going on for yourself, people knew about it. Everyone was pretty supportive for the most part.
By the time the years 2015-2018, I began to really accomplish things as a Dj to help my resume out. I began to Dj in city areas of Virginia, such as Richmond, VA, through a mutual friend that went to the same college as me. (Shoutout MisterTee) I participated in big events such as club events and concerts in the area. Performing sets at which is known as Club Mainstage now, the late club Mansion 534 of downtown Richmond, VA and Club Plush, Richmond, VA as well as opening for acts such as G Herbo and NBA Youngboy, to name a few. Fast forward to the summer of 2018, I have presented an opportunity to go on a state to state tour as an entertainment company Tour DJ. After that, my business relocated in the Northern Virginia area/DC area, performing sets at different lounges in the Northern Virginia area and clubs in the Washington DC area such as Eden and Club Opera. I currently relocated to the Georgia area networking.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been an easy road one bit. There were many struggles throughout my career as Dj. I’ve taken many of losses. Losses some people would not even imagine. To keep it short, though, there’s been plenty of nights where something technically would go wrong. You know, sometimes you may notice, but those very few seconds of no music is pretty embarrassing to me no matter how to go I would have played it off lol. I am thankful for those struggle moments 1,000%, though, because they have gotten me to the point I am at now.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a Dj. I specialize in providing entertainment for your event. Where it is a Club event, Wedding, Family reunion, anything!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the near future, I plan on getting back to traveling around the United States doing different sets. I am currently working with some artists from Richmond, Virginia, who am I helping push their music who I met through one of my friends (shoutout Brotha). Make sure you all follow my guys Shine & Yung Cleve, on IG (@804shine & @yung_cleve). I am also venturing into the production aspect of music as well. So be on the lookout for small placements and things like that within the next couple of years, possibly even months.
