Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Mang.
Ruth, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved to sing. I started freelance singing when I was little, but started professionally singing at age 12. I was a part of my church’s performing arts group, and later became a part of the worship band, which made me comfortable with performing on stage and helped me realize how much I enjoyed it. In the beginning of 2017, I began posting covers on social media. I post covers on my YouTube channel, SoundCloud, Instagram, Twitter, etc. As of current, I am working on my first single as well as my debut EP/album, set to release in 2019. In my music, I spread messages of self-love, positivity, and strength as well as facing painful parts of life like heartbreak and finding one’s purpose. I want to heal others with my music, whether my audience can relate to the lyrics/message of my songs or the instrumentals provide a temporary escape from reality. I also do some fashion modeling on the side and am currently expanding my portfolio of modeling my own outfits as well as looks that are put together by other stylists and designers. My main forum for modeling is Instagram.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think any artist/creator can agree with me that it is never an easy path to pursue a career in the artistic field. The greatest challenge I battle is self-doubt; I never know if the lyrics I write or the melodies I compose are good enough. However, I’ve come to realize that if the intention behind my work is genuine and comes from my heart, then it is good enough to me and that itself is enough. I believe that if I create music that is raw and authentic, others will naturally see my artistic purpose and appreciate the thought behind the work. It’s tough to believe in yourself, but once you do, you are unstoppable.
Please tell us about Ruth Mang.
I was born in Tamuning, Guam, and raised in Suwanee, GA. As of current, I am an independent recording artist. My music is heavily R&B influenced, with hints of pop and hip-hop. I am currently working on my first single as well as my debut EP/album set for release in 2019. Being from Burma/Myanmar, and being Asian in general, there isn’t much representation of my people in the Western music industry. I hope my career in music can encourage other Burmese and Asian artists, and even just any POC/minority artists, to continue creating and pursuing their dreams, and that there is 100% room for them in any industry they desire.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
As a child, I always loved singing karaoke, using my hairbrush as a mic and pretending to be a star in front of my mirror. It’s funny how life is, seeing as that is now my pursuit in life. Hopefully, I can make my childhood memory into a present reality. Fingers crossed.
